Monday, November 28th Brainstorm a list of 7 -10 areas / structures / “things” that you would find in the average city.
Here is the plan… • Students will design a city. • Students will understand the development of Latin America’s cities.
Urban Planner • Kevin (Footloose) Bacon’s father Edmund Bacon was a famous Urban Planner. • Responsible for much of the layout of modern Philadelphia.
Ed Bacon Skateboards in Protest • Edmund Bacon Skateboards in Protest • October 28, 2002: Edmund Bacon, the former Executive Director of the City Planning Commission, who conceived LOVE Park in 1932, at age 92 skateboards in LOVE Park as a demonstration in support of skateboarders. Vincent Kling, the architect of LOVE Park attends to show his support. Bacon was not arrested or fined.
Activity • Design a city based upon the elements that we brainstormed at the beginning of class.
Urbanization • Like most parts of the world, Latin America is becoming more urbanized. • Urban Primacy – a country in which a disproportionally large city dominates the urban system and is the center of economic, cultural, and political life. • These cities are 3 to 4 times larger than any other city in the country. Lima, Buenos Aires and Mexico City are examples.
Life In The Cities • Centers of Power and Wealth
Megalopolis • A large urban region formed as multiple cities grow and begin to merge with one another. For example the cites that make up the Northeast corridor of the USA. • Mexico City • Rio de Janeiro • Buenos Aires
Unfortunately… • The extreme urbanization has caused severe housing shortages. • Growth of squatter settlements or favelas. • Unequal distribution of wealth and a relatively small middle class. • Has led to the growth of an informal economic sector. EXAMPLE: drug trade
Life in a favela • Warm Up: Watch and discuss what life is like in Rocinha (Portuguese for ‘small ranch’), Brazil’s largest favela. • Visiting a favela in Sao Paolo • Tackling crime & poverty in Sao Paolo • Police & gangs clash in Rio
LAND • Ownership of land has always been an indicator of wealth or status in Latin America. EXAMPLE: Hacienda • Encomienda System • In Colonial Latin America most people had to work very hard to earn a living from the land.
Here is the plan… • Students will design a city. • Students will understand the development of Latin America’s cities.
