  1. Welcome to JJC COMPASS Testing! Over the next few minutes, you will learn: How this test directly impacts your academic career at JJC What accommodations are available How to successfully complete this test What COMPASS retesting options are offered

Why do I need this test? • This important placement test measures your math, reading, and writing abilities. • A COMPASS placement score is a mandatory prerequisite for math and English courses, as well as several other programs and classes. • Without the COMPASS test, you may be unable to register for your classes.

  3. Why do I need this test? • You are strongly encouraged to take this test seriously. • Lower scores may result in 1 to 4 additional semesters of coursework that do not count toward your degree. These classes that do not count toward your degree are called Developmental Classes.

  4. What accommodations are available? • There are three untimed parts to this test: • Math • Reading • Writing • You may take all three parts at once or you may break them into two or three separate sessions. • Please be aware that your scores are not recorded until your testing session is complete.

What accommodations are available? • You are allowed to use a calculator as long as it is not more advanced than a TI-86. • You are allowed to use scratch paper and a pencil. • You may request earplugs to block out noise distractions. • Testing and retesting are available at Main Campus, North Campus, and Grundy County Campus.

What accommodations are available? • Please speak with the COMPASS Proctor IMMEDIATELY* in the following cases: • In the case of documented dyslexia or a severe reading disability, you may be eligible to take the Asset Test which is a paper version of the COMPASS test. *You will be referred to the Student Accommodations and Resources (StAR) Office. This office is located at the Main Campus on Houbolt Road.

What accommodations are available? • Please speak with the COMPASS Proctor IMMEDIATELY* in the following cases: • In the case of someone who reads sign language, interpreter accommodations are also available to eligible students. *You will be referred to the Student Accommodations and Resources (StAR) Office. This office is located at the Main Campus on Houbolt Road.

What accommodations are available? • Please speak with the COMPASS Proctor IMMEDIATELY* in the following cases: • In the case of someone who feels they need additional accommodations not mentioned in this presentation *You will be referred to the Student Accommodations and Resources (StAR) Office. This office is located at the Main Campus on Houbolt Road.

What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Student ID Number • You will be asked to type in your last name and Student ID Number. • Your Student ID Number is your 7-digit JJC ID Number • Enter YOUR Student ID Number using the following format: • XXXXXXX • Example: 0028643 Write this helpful tip on your scratch paper!

What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Student ID Number • What happens if I type this number incorrectly? • If you type your number incorrectly into the COMPASS Test, your COMPASS scores will not be recorded accurately. • This will delay your ability to attend a Group Advising and E-Registration Session and register for classes. • If you are unsure of your Student ID Number (JJC ID Number), please see the COMPASS Proctor.

What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Resources • You are allowed to use a calculator as long as it is not more advanced than a TI-86. • If you did not bring a calculator today, please see the COMPASS Proctor about borrowing one. • You are allowed scratch paper and a pencil, but EVERYTHING MUST BE RETURNED to the COMPASS Proctor or you will not receive your score report.

  12. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Survey Questions • You will be asked a series of questions including the name of the high school you attended, whether you are a veteran, etc. • Your answers to these questions will in no way affect your COMPASS score. • The information collected from these questions is used for internal JJC academic purposes only.

  13. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Math Testing • You can pick the level of math testing at which you would like to begin your test. • Your choices are • Pre-algebra • Algebra • College Algebra Write your math level on your scratch paper!

What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Math Testing • Select Pre-Algebra if you • Have a limited or undetermined exposure to algebra • Have performed poorly in previous algebra courses • Have not used your algebra training in a long time Write your math level on your scratch paper!

What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Math Testing • Select Algebra if you • Have recently completed a pre-algebra or basic algebra course • Feel your current level of performance suggests a lack of readiness for a college-level algebra course Write your math level on your scratch paper!

  16. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Math Testing • Select College Algebra if you • Have recently demonstrated proficiency in intermediate algebra courses Write your math level on your scratch paper!

  17. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Math Testing • Your math-level choice will not affect your score, but selecting the level that best matches your ability may result in a shorter test.

  18. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Score Report • At the end of this test, as long as you have returned all borrowed items (calculator, all scratch paper, and pencil), you will receive a copy of your COMPASS scores along with a brief explanation about what these scores mean. • All COMPASS Score Report questions should be directed to the Counseling Department

  19. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Academic Honor Code • Acts of dishonesty include • Cheating • Plagiarism • Unauthorized collaboration • Falsification or fabrication • Facilitation of academic dishonesty

  20. What do I need to know to successfully complete this test? • Academic Honor Code • If you commit an act of dishonesty, • Your COMPASS scores will be invalidated. • The Dean of Students will be notified. • You will have a Code of Conduct hearing in front of the Conduct Board.

  21. What COMPASS retesting options are offered? • Retesting • For a fee, retesting is available at multiple locations: • Main Campus – Academic Skills Center • North Campus – Resource Center • Grundy County Campus – Computer Lab

  22. What COMPASS retesting options are offered? • Retesting • In order to be eligible to retake all or a portion of the COMPASS test you • Must have taken the COMPASS test only ONE other time. • You are limited to only one retest for each of the three parts: • Math • Reading • Writing

What COMPASS retesting options are offered? • Retesting • In order to be eligible to retake all or a portion of the COMPASS test you • Cannot have begun math or English classes • Once you have attempted a JJC math course, you cannot retake the COMPASS math test. • Once you have attempted a JJC reading course, you cannot retake the COMPASS reading test. • Once you have attempted a JJC writing course, you cannot retake the COMPASS writing test. • For more information about retesting, please see a COMPASS Proctor.
