  2. In 1903 the social democratic party split into two sections: The Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks • Bolshevik means ‘The majority’ • They were focused on gathering the working class for their cause.

  3. Bolshevik Beliefs • Believed in organizing a centralized hierarchy whose goal was to overthrow the Tsar and his government • After overthrowing the Tsar, they would establish a centralistic democracy • Their ideology was based on Marxism

  4. Main People • Lenin was the leader and creator of the Bolsheviks • Joseph Stalin was the man who set off the Red Terror, and was Lenins’ ‘Mouth piece’ when Lenin was ill. • Leon Trotsky was part of the Menshevik party until 1904 when he left, and then he joined Lenin in 1917 Lenin Trotsky Stalin

Main Events • 1903 Lenin suggested limiting party membership to only a small number of professionals and leaving sympathizers outside the party, but Julius Martov disagreed with him which led to the splitting of the Social democratic party • They attempted to reunite with the Mensheviks in 1907 and 1910 but both of those attempts failed • After the First World War the Russian economy was in a disastrous state - the prices rose sky-high which led to a strike by the industrial workers - on 11th February a massive crowd marched through Petrograd. By the 27th 200,000 strikers were there

In fear of a larger revolution, the Tsar abdicated on the 1st March 1917 leaving the Provisional Government in control of the country • Lenin agreed with Trotsky on overthrowing the Provisional Government and on October 24th Lenin issued orders to occupy the railway stations, telephone exchange and the state bank. The next day, the Red Guards occupied the Winter palace. At 9 PM the defenders of the palace surrendered and the Red Guard entered the palace and arrested the cabinet ministers. • On 26th of October the old Russian congress of Soviet handed power over to the Soviet council of peoples commissars with Lenin as chairman, Trotsky (foreign affairs), Alexi Ricov and Felix Dzerzhinsky (internal affairs), Anatoli Lunacharsky (education), Stalin (nationalities)

  7. The Red Terror • When Lenin was shot, Stalin was so enraged that he said anyone responsible would be shot on sight without a trial.And because the socialists were blamed, they were hunted down like animals. In the months that followed it is said that 800 socialists died • In one year 6,300 people died (the official number)
