  1. The Rise of Lenin and The Bolsheviks

  2. After the fall of Czar Nicholas,a new government was formed by the Middle Class Russians.

  3. But Russia was still fighting a war against Germany.

  4. The workers and the soldiers banded together and created The Soviets. One group among the soviets took control.

  5. The Bolsheviks

  6. Their leader - Lenin

  7. Early on, Lenin was against capitalism and class inequality in Russia. When he failed to overthrow Czar Nicholas in 1905, he fled to Germany. In 1917, when Czar Nicholas was overthrown and a new government was formed, he saw an opportunity to return and take power. German military leaders realized that Lenin’s actions would cause disorder and make Russia weak. So they decided to help Lenin by smuggling him into Russia, in a secret train ride.

  8. Under Lenin’s leadership, the Bolsheviks gained the support of the Soviets by promising them the following. • To end the war. • Equal wealth and land to all workers and peasants. • Transfer of government power to the soviets.

  9. With the support of the Bolsheviks and the Soviets, Lenin was able to overthrow the new Russian Government. The middle class Russians were no longer in power, but they did not totally disappear. In a few short time, they would regroup and return to wage a civil war against Lenin and his followers.

  10. In the mean time, the Bolsheviks then renamed themselves the Communists; and their power continued to grow and expand. To keep his promise to the soviets, Lenin signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany. Under the treaty, Russia lost territory to Germany.

  11. The surrender of Russia to Germany and the loss of some of its territories made no difference to Lenin. He believed that the socialist revolution against class inequality would spread all over Europe, and therefore spread the influence and control of the Communists to all over the world.Besides, he had promised peace to the Russian people.

  12. But there was no peace. Soon a civil war broke out between two sides. VS. Red Army White Army

  13. That’s a story for another day…
