  1. XCRI mini-projects Call III: course description and discovery Sarah DaviesProgramme Manager, JISC

  2. What’s the big idea? • If institutions can automatically generate structured lists of the courses they offer, these can be used by the institution and picked up by aggregators without the need to re-key data. • In order for this to happen, we need an agreed format for describing course offerings • exchanging course-related information: course advertising profile • XCRI-CAP for short • Draft XML specification

  3. What do we want? • Projects to test out the theory by gathering, consolidating, structuring and publishing their own course advertising information • and to report on their experiences

  4. What will you (probably) have to do? • Document the existing online information on your courses, including that supplied to bodies such as UCAS • Identify where the information that contributes to this is stored in your institution, and how the data is structured • Map your course information data items to the XCRI schema • Implement a web service to output your course data from your systems as an XCRI-CAP document (dynamic and repeatable, not manual process) • Test this with the aggregator and refine • Produce a report

  5. Key factors are: Number of courses Complexity of provision Number of sources Quality of authoring Data structures Update frequency Audit trail Centralisation (UG/PG) Process capability Technical capability Organisational context Resources How ready is your institution? See the XCRI Implementation Models report for further information and guidance on implementation

  6. What will markers be looking for? • Six pages only • A catalogue of course offerings of sufficient range and detail to provide a realistic test • A clear purpose to using the XCRI feed • Feasible workplan in the light of current processes and data systems • Time commitment from staff in marketing, quality assurance, and management information systems • Plans to evaluate the XCRI implementation • An understanding of the scale of the task – both technical and organisational
