About the Disease • Aphtae epizooticae • Highly contagious and sometimes fatal • Mainly affects cloven footed animals, such as Bison, antelope, deer, pigs, and cattle • May also effect hedgehogs and elephants • May be carried by other animals as well, such as dogs and wolves • Rarely affects humans • Sensitive to stomach acid
Serotypes • There are 7 Serotypes • O • A • C • SAT-1 • SAT-2 • SAT-3 • Asia-1 • Regionality shown
Clinical signs • Incubation period: 2-12 days • High Fever(rapidly declines in 2-3 dys) • Oral blisters • stringy, foamy saliva/ drooling • Blisters on feet • Severe weight loss in adults • May lead to myocarditis and death in younger animals
How it’s Spread • Contact between animals • Aerosol spread • Fomites/ inanimate objects • Fodder, motor vehicles, bones, etc • Other ways the disease is transmitted: • Clothes and skin of animal handlers • Standing water • Bull semen • Uncooked meat (cannot spread to humans this way)
In Humans • Humans may contract it from other animals but are rarely affected • Last confirmed human case in UK: 1966 • Mostly affects humans by affecting livestock • Agriculture industry
