Prague PublicTransport Co.Inc. Basic information Metropolitan bus lines Jan Barchánek Bus operation unit, deputy manager Prague, May 2012
Basic data of Prague Public Transit Inc. (PPT) Prague: City area 496 sq. km Population about 1,200,000 Job opportunities about 780,000 Road network3.520 km PPT: Public ownership100% by City Market share 100% metro, tram 68% bus (91% in city) Personnel 11.057 employee PPT network: Metro (underground) 59 km 3 day lines 610 coaches Tram 142 km 25 day + 9 night lines 964 trams Bus (PPT - within the city) 690 km 151 day + 16 night lines 1224 buses PPT performance:Metro 48 % passengers 164 millions vehicle km per year Tram 28 % passengers 1224 millions passengers per year Bus 24 % passengers
PPT – key actions (1) • Metro • line A extension (in construction) • new line D (project) • reconstruction of stations – lifts for disabled people • Tram • new rolling stock – 15T (100% low-floor) • tram track reconstruction (in progress) • new tram tracks (planned) • Bus • new rolling stock – diversification • midibus (< 9m), standard (11-13 m), articulated (17-19m) • new technologies, alternative fuels • Euro 5 EEV – new vehicles • FAME – older vehicles • hybrid, electro – testing operation
PPT – key actions (2) • Quality of service • PIT standards, company standards (EN 13816) • accessibility for disabled people (low-floor vehicles, barrierless stations, special lines, voice information for blind people) • punctuality • safety and security (CCTV) • IT systems • on-board IT • AVL systems • real-time information • smart phone application
PPT – key actions (3) • Economic efficiency decreasing costs • staff optimization • energy / fuel consumption reduction increasing commercial speed • priority measurements(at key points of network) • segregated tram track, dedicated bus lanes • priority at traffic lights • accessibility – decrease boarding time • more doors (all doors boarding) • low-floor access • wide space for wheelchairs or child prams • door opening on demand • bus stops on demand
Bus bay easy departure
Bus lane on tram track Commercial speed Regularity Seamless interchange BUS - TRAM
Priority at traffic lights TRAM: mostly wire contacts BUS:infra beacon + radio transmission • 144 traffic lights (23%) • 826 busses (68%) CIVITAS project(2002-2004) EU Funding(2006-2008)
Metropolitan bus lines concept • Situation in Prague • high level of private motorization, daily congestion on main roads • decrease level of punctuality and commercial speed at bus network • wide bus network (a lot of lines with different directions and intervals) • lack of PT capacity in some radial and tangential directions (missing rail PT)
Metropolitan bus lines concept • Concept of solution • re-plan bus network – 3 hierarchical levels – metrobus / bus / midibus • Metrobus lines – increase level of quality and attractiveness of PT busses • shorter intervals • more capacity – articulated buses • more priority measurements, less stops • better time and space connection to metro, tram and rail network • real-time passenger information (stops, on-board, mobile apps, etc.) • better orientation for occasional users • Realization • step by step development • strengthen of tangential bus lines • midibus lines development (since 2003) • promotion of advances • full realization is prepared need stakeholder agreement
125 125 Backbone lines network
Example of metropolitan bus line • Line 125 • new tangential bus connection (south-west ↔ south-east) • shorter travel time then by metro through city centre • party using inner city-ring (heavy vehicles access denied) • started 1.10.2010
