  3. Agenda • Rules/Expectations • Elements of Drama (intro to the project) • Vocabulary • Novel 164-179 + Reading group discussion • Rotations- emphasis on dialogue and what it reveals • HW: new notebook

  4. Vocabulary: Please copy down on 1R cont’d • Dialogue • Stage directions • Monologue • Aside • Green room • Ham • House • Realism • Cue • Chorus • Gather the definitions from your notes/dictionary on your desk!

  5. Reading Group Discussion • Novel MBSD: pgs. 164-179 • On a separate piece of paper: • Each group will need to identify a theme and give five quotes that support their theme as well as an explanation of each quote and what it represents.

  8. Agenda • Objective: SWBAT craft a complete and correct introduction for your practice response to literature essay (ongoing). • The 5 paragraph Response to Literature Essay an Introduction • Drama Unit Project Part 1 Day 1

  9. We are going to break apart a five paragraph response to literature essay • This is a preparation, step by step guide to being able to write the in-class essay for the novel test. Use this practice to help you study for the exam (February) • We will start with the introduction as the days progress we will move to the body paragraphs and then conclusion. • Please copy this down on page 2R: Prompt: Throughout the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, the relationship between Sam and Tim changes. Describe how the changes in their relationship contribute to the overall theme of the text. Be specific.

  10. Notebook setup • Please skip 10 pages (front and back) • Label each page 2R and 2L so that the entire essay will be contained on these pages • If you write big then skip 12 pages

  11. Novel • Read: 180-195 (15 pages) • Discuss and answer: 1. What is the importance/meaning of the quote on page 167: “In war the dead pay the debts for the living.” • 2. What do you think the quote on p. 184 foreshadow? “I have a terrible foreboding, Timothy. I want to pray.” • 3. What is commissary scrip? Why does it cause problems for the people in Redding? • 4. What do you think about Sam getting falsely accused of stealing cattle? What would you do if you were Tim?

Drama Project: Part 1 Day 1 • Write all of this on a sheet of paper: • Pick your group: No more than five people (write their names) • Write down your chapters • Assign roles: Director • Actors • Playwrights ( everyone must help with the script) • Set designer/Sound Designer/Film- a drawing of all sets, a list of music if used, editing in the film • Narrator

Reader’s Response Notebooks • Activity: Pick one section of dialogue from your fiction book (either IR or GR) that you believe reveals something important about the characters, plot, theme or conflict. Make sure to reference the page number and the author in your explanation. The explanation must be at least a page long and focus on exactly what the characters are saying and what it reveals/why it is important. Give a background description of the characters, plot and setting to put your explanation in context. 15mins

  15. Agenda Objective: Students will be able to craft body paragraphs for their response to literature essay. Students will create original scripts for their ongoing drama project. • Lecture: Types of Theater/Literary terms • Body Paragraphs (Continuing your essay) • Drama Unit Project Part 1 Day 2

  16. Drama Project Day 2 Part 1 • January 14/15 • Chapter Analysis: Part 1 Day 2 • On a separate sheet of paper (Everyone must complete one and this is the first part of our drama project: 25 pts.) Please identify: The major events, important characters (why), conflicts and important quotes. • Create three questions based on your chapters you would want to see on a quiz. (I will pull some of these for the actual quizzes) • Define 3 words from your chapter you do not understand

  17. Response to Literature • This is a preparation, step by step guide to being able to write the in-class essay for the novel test. Use this practice to help you study for the exam • We will continue with the body paragraphs • This is a continuation to the prompt on page 2R:Throughout the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, the relationship between Sam and Tim changes. Describe how the changes in their relationship contribute to the overall theme of the text. Be specific.

  18. Drama Unit Poject: Part 2 Day 3 • January 17/18 • Today you will complete the first scene of your script. This means you will write a script with both dialogue and action for your first assigned chapter. You need to make sure that your dialogue is true to the story and captures all major events. Read through the summaries/analyses I have provided (required). Include that info into your script. • DO NOT FORGET: a part for the narrator as well as ALL ACTION/SETTING • Also: Set designers will need to complete at least one sketch of their sets for the first chapter as well as costumes for the actors. These sketches need to be detailed and colored (Please add description of what everything is) • DUE AT THE END OF CLASS

  20. Drama Unit Project: Part 2 Day 4 • Today you will complete the second scene of your script. This means you will write a script with both dialogue and action for your second assigned chapter. You need to make sure that your dialogue is true to the story and captures all major events. • DO NOT FORGET: a part for the narrator as well (look into those summaries) as well as ALL ACTION/SETTING • Also: Set designers will need to complete at least one sketch of their sets of the second chapter as well as costumes for the actors. These sketches need to be detailed and colored (Please add description of what everything is) • DUE AT THE END OF CLASS
