Learn about the principles of probability and how they apply to genetics using Punnett squares. Discover how Mendel used probability to predict genetic outcomes. Practice calculating probabilities using percentages in genetics scenarios. Explore the concept of Punnett squares and how they show allele combinations. Enhance your understanding of genetic crosses and the inheritance of alleles. Save resources by using two drops of glue in your Science Notebook.

DSJ #20 Science Notebook – Page 42B Prompt: In 5 sentences or more, describe situations in which you have or might use a coin toss to decide an issue. Why would a coin toss be ideal in these situations?
Learning Objective • Students will know what Punnett square is and how it’s used in genetics.
Principles of Probability 1. A number that describes how likely it is that a certain event will occur is called probability. 2. Example: What is the probability that a tossed coin will land on heads? On tails?
Principles of Probability 3. & 4. The laws of probability predict what is likely to occur, not necessarily what will occur.
One way you can express a probability is as a percentage. A percentage (%) is a number compared to 100. For example, 50% means 50 out of 100. Suppose that 3 out of 5 tossed coins landed with heads up. Here’s how you can calculate what percent of the coins landed with heads up. Write the comparison as a fraction. 3 out of 5 = 3/5 2. Multiply the fraction by 100% to express it as a percentage. 3/5 x 100%/1 = 60% Principles of Probability:Percentages
Practice Problem Suppose 3 out of 12 coins landed with tails up. How can you express this as a percent? 25% Principles of Probability:Percentages
Probability and Genetics 5. Whenever Mendel crossed two hybrid plants for stem height (Tt), his results were the following: (Write the answer as a fraction and as a percent) Tt Tt
Probability and Genetics 6. Mendel realized that the principles of probability could be used to predict the results of genetic crosses.
Probability and Genetics 7. A chart that shows all possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross is called a Punnett square. Punnett Square
Probability and Genetics:A Punnett Square The diagrams show how to make a Punnett square.
Probability and Genetics 8. In a genetic cross, the allele that each parent will pass on to its offspring is based on probability.

Glue in SNB **Please remember to use only TWO drops of glue!!** If everyone uses only TWO drops, a lot of glue is saved over time…. • 41A – Probability and Genetics (Notes) • 42A – PunnettSquares Practice
DSR #20 • Science Notebook – Page 42B (Under DSJ #20) • Prompt: What is probability? What did Mendel find useful with the principles of probability? What is the chart that is used in genetics and what does it show geneticists?
