  1. Putting Plastic in its Place By: Zak Coppinger Michael Cvejanovich Mike Hoeft

  2. Did You Know? • Recycling 1 aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours. • Enough aluminum is thrown away to rebuild America’s commercial air fleet 4 times every year. • Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees and 7,000 gallons of water. • Every year, enough paper is thrown away to make a twelve foot wall from New York to California • If America recycled everyplastic bottle we used, we would keep two billion tons of plastic out of landfills.

  3. Recycling at the SUB • Did you know there was a recycling program at the SUB? • Do you (a student) recycle at the SUB?

  4. Recycling at the SUB • Problems with the SUB’s recycling Program: • Student Awareness • Bin Location and Appearance • Student Knowledge of What is Recyclable • Contamination • Lids of Plastic Bins • Costs $ to Recycle and Program is not very successful

  5. Possible Solutions • University of Minnesota’s SMART System • Relocating Bins • Capture rate increased from 60% to 90%. • 95% of the materials were placed into the correct bins. • Reduced Custodial Labor

  6. Possible Solutions • Increase Student Awareness and Knowledge • Posters • Advertisements • Article in Daily Toreador

  7. Our Recommendation • Relocate Bins Next to Trash Cans • Posters Above Bins or Magnets on Bins • Article in Daily Toreador • Increase Student Awareness!!

  8. Our Recommendation • Disadvantages: • “Clutter” • Money • Time • Teach Janitors • Order/Put up Posters • Write Article for DT

  9. Our Recommendation • Advantages: • Increase Awareness • Increase Capture Rate • Recycle Program more efficient • Lower Labor hours • Clutter? • Not negative attention. • Put TTU in Positive Light • Potentially Very Cheap • If it works, other buildings will do the same • Save the World
