livestock live talks new series of ILRI-hosted monthly seminars NEW! Overview Zoonotic diseases or zoonoses (diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans) are a global health problem that particularly affects the poor in developing countries. New research by ILRI and partners has found that zoonotic diseases make up 26% of the infectious disease burden in low income countries, but just 0.7% of the infectious disease burden in high income countries. Innovative research approaches such as One Health/Ecohealth are increasingly being adopted to provide evidence to inform policies and decisions aimed at preventing and controlling the spread of zoonoses. About the speaker Delia Grace is a veterinarian and epidemiologist and leads ILRI’s research on animal health, food safety and zoonoses. She also leads a component on agriculture-associated diseases under the new CGIAR Research Program on agriculture for nutrition and health. She has led around 50 studies on food safety in informal markets of developing countries over the last six years and is the author of numerous chapters, scientific papers and communication products. • The deadly gifts of livestock • A talk by Delia Grace, veterinary epidemiologist and food safety expert at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) • What are zoonoses? • What are the socio-economic and health impacts of zoonoses? • What are the current ‘hot topics’ on research on zoonoses? • Venue: John Vercoe Auditorium, ILRI NairobiDate: Wednesday 31 October 2012 • Time: 1500 to 1600 hours • The 20-minute talk will be followed by a moderated panel discussion and a question-and-answer session.
