  2. Presidential Primaries • Elections in which delegates can express their preference for presidential candidates • Democrats use proportional system, Republicans all-or-nothing

  3. Additional Role of Primaries • Force candidates seeking party endorsement to test their chances • Party out-of-power usually has a hard fought campaign

  4. Conventions • The party tells each state how many delegates it may send • Number is based on state’s electoral votes, with bonus delegates for those states that have supported the party in past elections • Occur every four years
