Digital TV – Why go digital? • Higher quality picture - Digital conversion takes out the “noise” from the signal. • Less bandwidth – digital data is compressed which allows for more “white space” for other data. • Compatibility with other digital devices--tv’s are now designed for digital/computer compatibility.
Downside to digital TV? • With analog signals shut down, US and other countries are forced to get a converter box for analog (rabbit ear) TVs. • With analog, if the signal is weak, at least a fuzzy image will show. With digital, if a signal is not found, you will see nothing. • Limited color range (analog is unlimited)

Virtualization and Mobile Devices • What is virtualization? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnmq97yAK0Y • The ability to partition physical devices into multilayers. • Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and multiple applications on the same physical computer. • Virtualization is different from cloud computing in that you control the servers. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnNX13yBzAU

VOIP • VOIP – Voice over internet protocol – allows you to make telephone calls over the Internet. • SPIT – Spam over Internet Telephone • SIP – Session Initiation Protocol – the technical protocol for VOIP. Like HTTP is the Web protocol. • SIP is one big set in the communication technology and VoIP is a subset in that. • SIP includes video and instant messaging communication. • SIP establishes the communication channel. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q_BrQpZfFE
VOIP Equipment Needed • To use VOIP you need one of these: • A broadband modem and an ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor) • VOIP equipped IP telephone • Computer with Internet connection
VOIP Services • Two routes to go with VOIP: • Use free VOIP services (Skype, • Sign up with a VOIP service provider which charges a monthly fee.
VOIP Advantages • A great money saver for both businesses and residential users. • Integration with email, FAX, voicemail, and video technology • Enables mobility—phone can be used anywhere with broadband connection keeping the same phone number. You can keep your cell phone for personal use only and use the VOIP number for work only.
VOIP Limitiations • There are a number of security issues including eavesdropping • The quality of voice is not as good as traditional telephony. It is mainly because it is susceptible to all the hurdles of Internet connection such as latency, jitter, packet loss etc. • Failure of precise user tracking in case of emergency 911 calling • VoIP is dependent on wall power
VOIP and 911Regulation • Before an interconnected VoIP provider can activate a new customer’s service, the provider must obtain from the customer the physical location at which the service will first be used, so that emergency services personnel will be able to locate any customer dialing 911. • VoIP providers must also provide one or more easy ways for their customers to update the physical location if they move. • Interconnected VoIP providers must transmit all 911 calls, as well as a callback number and the caller’s registered physical location, to the appropriate emergency services call center or local emergency authority. • Interconnected VoIP providers must obtain affirmative acknowledgement from all existing customers that they are aware of and understand the limitations of their 911 service.
VOIP Users Should….. • Provide your accurate physical address to your VOIP provider. • Be familiar with your VoIP service provider’s procedures for updating your address, and promptly update address information in the event of a change. • Inform children, babysitters and visitors about your VoIP service and its 911 limitations. • If your power is out or your Internet connection is down, be aware that your VoIP service may not work. Consider installing a backup power supply, maintaining a traditional phone line or having a wireless phone as a backup.
