Geraldo, No Last Name • Where does this vignette mostly take place? • What was Geraldo wearing? • How did he die? • Where did Marin meet him? • What type of care did Geraldo receive at the hospital? • Where is Geraldo’s family? • Marin appears to Esperanza to be sad about Geraldo’s death. She only met him and danced with him that night. Why might Marin be sad about his death? • Toward the end of the vignette, the narrator writes “What does it matter? They never saw the kitchenettes. They never knew about the two room flats and sleeping rooms he rented, the weekly money orders sent home, the currency exchange. How could they?” (66) Who might the “they” be? If Esperanza didn’t actually see or know these things, how can she be so concrete about them? • “Gerado—he went North….we never heard from him again.” Who is the assumed speaker in this sentence that concludes the vignette? What are the two possible meanings of “north”? • What do you think Elenita could mean by “a home in the heart”?
