When Mission was Built (Founded) • The mission was found on December 14, 1817.It was found in California. San Rafael was founded as a place for the ailing people for there health.
Mission Site • The address of this Mission is 1104 Fifth Avenue San Rafael CA. The number of the mission is 94901-2916.
Father Junipero Serra • Father Junipero Serra was born on November 24th 1713, but his name wasn't Junipero. His name was Miguel Jose. He was born in an island named Majorica. He was ordained a father in 1737.
Founder of Mission • The founder of this mission is Vincente de Sarria, Franciscan Friars, Fray Narciso Duran, Fray Jose Ramon Abella, Fray Gil, and the man who was the president of the California missions.
Agriculture and Livestock •In 1832 the mission San Rafael had 2,120 cattle, 3,000 sheep, 370 horses and two hard working mules.
Indians Joining this Mission • Miwok and Ohlone hunted rabbits, deer, and bears. Also they lived by hunting, fishing, and gathering food. They also caught birds and other animals to eat. They ate wild plants, seeds, and acorns, and apples.
Population •The population of this mission is 1,051 in 1826. By 1840 only 150 neophytes remained. Between 1817 and 1839 1,902 marriages were conducted at San Rafael.
Significant Events •There was 519 marriages, and 1,821 baptisms. Also there where 652 burials. They secularized mission San Rafael 1,834 times.
Current Use of the Mission • The mission of San Rafael Arcangel sits next to the parish church or St Rapheal. It is located on the site of the original hospital established Father Gil. It is open to visitors and has a small museum and gift shop.
What I Liked Best • What I like best about my mission San Rafael Arcangel is that it’s a really nice mission to visit. My opinion about my mission is that its popular. I think that I was lucky to have this mission.
