This picture is the group of women who is inovolved in Women literacy program (WLP) Women literacy program was started in Phaplu, Sallery VDC, almost two years ago. Women learned about the need of clean environment, hygiene and sanitation through the courses they are learning. Women's of the literacy program felt the necessity of not just learning it but also use it practically. They decided to start community cleaning program. They decided to request every member of household in Phaplu area to come to participate in cleaning program every 2nd day of the month. They also decided to make it compulsory for every household to send at least one member for the cleaning program. They decided to charge fine of Rs. 350 if any one from the household fails to participate in the cleaning program. This program is being run successfully in Phaplu, Solukhumbu. Every 2nd day of month they come out to the street and collect the plastics, papers, bottles or any thing that is thrown in the street. They collect it and send it to the garbage collector. They also collected Rs. 2800 through fining in the household for not participating in the cleaning program. With the amount collected through charging fines, they made wooden boxes to be used as dust bin and placed in different places of Phaplu area. I believe this is one good example of the change literacy program brought to the community. They have also started saving and credit program and initiated organic kitchen gardening as well.
