  1. Chapter 9 Sec. 2: The Fall of Rome I. The Decline of Rome: A. After Aurelius death, Commodus and the Severans ruled Rome. B. Following the Severan rule, Rome grew weak and corrupt. This led to a failing economy. C. A plague, or a disease that spreads widely, broke out and killed many people. D. Inflation, or rapidly increasing prices, occurred because money became less valuable.

  2. Chapter 9 Sec. 2: The Fall of Rome • E. Invaders began pushing into the empire’s territory, and the Roman government could not pay soldiers. • F. Emperor Diocletian tried to establish reform to improve the situation • G. Emperor Constantine tried to stop the empire’s decline. He moved the capital city from Rome to Byzantine and the name later changed to Constantinople. • H. Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to become a Christian.

  3. II. Rome Falls • A. Theodosius became emperor after Constantine’s death and split the empire into two separate empires: The Western and Eastern Roman Empires. • B. Fearing the Huns, the Visigoths asked Rome for protection. Rome would require loyalty as repayment for protection. • C. Eventually, the Visigoths would rebel against Rome and defeat them at the Battle of Adrianople. • D. More Germanic groups invaded Roman territory. These included: Ostrogoth, Visigoths, Franks, Vandals, Angles, and the Saxons

  4. Rome Falls: • E. The Visigoth leader Alaric and his soldiers captured the city of Rome and burned it. • F. The Vandals overpowered Rome’s territories in Spain and Northern Africa. Following this victory, the Vandals went into Rome and took control of it. • G. Odoacer, the Germanic leader, took over Rome’s government in the West and this became the end of the Western Roman Empire.- Odoacer was killed later by a band of Visigoths. • H.The Eastern Roman Empire continued to prosper after the Western- it later became known as the Byzantine Empire.

  5. III. Legacy of Rome • A. Law & Government of Ancient Rome influenced the U.S. • B. The Latin alphabet is used in the Western world today- many languages stemmed from Latin( Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian). • C. Western architecture uses the style of the Romans, such as domes and arches. • D. Christianity began to flourish in the Roman Empire.
