  2. Normal Joints • Go to http://www.shockfamily.net/skeleton/JOINTS.HTML and observe the different Shockwave movies that illustrate how the different joints move. • Note that not all of the examples have animations.

  3. Types of Arthritis • Go to http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/OTA1804/OTA1804.swf and take notes on the causes and problems associated with Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

  4. Arthritis of the Foot • There are 28 bones and 30 joints in the foot. • This is an example of rheumatoid arthritis, which occurs when the joint lining or synovium becomes inflamed and pulls the bones out of place.

  5. Arthritis of the Hand • Inflammatory arthritis occurs when your own body considers pieces of tissue as “foreign” and attacks them. This is what is causing the bones to be pulled out of position.

  11. Osteophytes • Are outgrowths of bones and are also called “bone spurs” • Form in osteoarthritis • Very painful • Some surgically removed or treated with steroids to reduce inflammation

  12. Extreme Osteophytes • Here is the ankle and x-ray of a woman with extreme osteoarthritic osteophytes in the ankle.
