  2. background 2014 – The Waukesha County Federated Library System (WCFLS) launched a traditional 1000 Books before Kindergarten program for its member libraries. The 1000 Books before Kindergarten program is traditionally offered as a pencil and paper model where parents/caregivers record which books they’ve read to their children. 2015 – WCFLS launched the 1000 Books before Kindergarten app. 2016 –The library system brought on the libraries of Jefferson County and became the Bridges Library System. Bridges Library System reached out to the other library systems in the state of Wisconsin to ask if they would like to partner with us on version 2.0 of the app. We received an overwhelmingly positive response. We now have 9 library systems, including our own, participating in the app. Version 2.0 is set to release late summer 2016. Library communities around Wisconsin will begin promoting and using the app just like we do here in SE Wisconsin. Learn more about our app partners: http://www.read1000books.org/partners

Where can I download the app? • The 1000 Books before Kindergarten app is available in the Android Google Play store and the Apple iTunes store. • When users visit the app stores, they may see that the app was developed by the ‘Waukesha County Federated Library System,’ which is the former name of the Bridges Library System. We are working on updating the name but please know that it is not an easy process.

  4. Open app from device • After downloading the app from the app store, it will appear on your device. • The app icon art is just a mini version of the 1000 Books before Kindergarten logo (see picture at left)

  5. Set up an account ‘Create Account’ if you are a new user OR If you are a returning user, you can log in (the app will save your password unless you manually log out from ‘Account Settings’) Enter an email address, password, parent’s name and zip code. Click ‘Select your library’  this is the look up field to search for participating libraries in the state. Please note: not all zip codes in WI are listed. Only partnering library zip codes have been loaded in the backend of the app.

If the zip code isn’t found, the user can still create an account About 50% of the library systems and their libraries in WI are partners in this app, meaning the zip codes associated with those libraries are listed. If a zip code is not found, a user can still add their local library. These zip codes will go into a ‘catch all’ type library so these patrons can still use the app. Missing zip codes can be added. Email your library system or Angela Meyers at Bridges Library System with any additions/corrections.

  7. Finish creating account Users are prompted with a message asking if they would like to share their email address with the library they selected. Users can opt ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ Users may change their preference later in the ‘Account Settings.’ If the user agreed to sharing their email address with the library, the library may send a welcome or reminder messages to the user. Upon completing the registration process, the user will receive a “Registration Complete” message.

  8. App navigation The app is pretty simple with only five main areas to work with. Select/Add a Child – you may add up to 5 children Book List – where the child’s book list is stored Add Book – where you go to search, scan or manually add a book Achievements – where you go to see what achievements you and your child have reached Account Settings – update your password, change your library, change contact preference settings and log out. This area also houses the library override feature. More on that later!

  9. Add child or modify Users can add up to 5 children to an account. If a user wishes to add more than 5, another account will need to be set up using a different email address. Accounts can be shared with other caregivers. The username (email) and password will need to be shared in order to access the same account. Add a child using the default photo of an owl and the child’s favorite color. Or, use a custom photo from your device’s camera roll. Please note that this photo remains stored on the device. If the photo is deleted from the device’s camera roll, the photo will become unavailable in the app. The child’s photo or reading record can be deleted. Simply press and hold the child’s photo for menu options. Please note that if a child’s reading record is deleted, it can not be recovered.

Account settings-Change library If a user moved and would like to switch libraries, they can do so in the Account Settings of the app. Note, this will only change who they are affiliated with in the app, NOT in any integrated library system (ILS). Furthermore, the app is not connected with any library ILS’s. To change libraries, the user will click ‘Change Your Library’ and type a new zip code. A list of possible libraries will display. For testing purposes, I entered the zip code 53066 which is associated with several libraries in Waukesha County. I selected Oconomowoc Public Library as my new library. The screen to the right shows that the library has updated successfully. Why do we have this feature? See the events slide at the end of this slideshow.

  11. Account settings – change password Users can change their password at any time by clicking on ‘Account Settings’ and then ‘Change Your Password’ The app will keep the user auto logged in unless they select the ‘Logout’ button.

  12. Account settings - faq Bridges Library System is working on populating the site www.read1000books.org for its partnering libraries and users to find information about the app. Users can get to this information by clicking on ‘FAQ’ from the account settings page.

  13. Account settings – update email sharing When users sign up for the app, they are asked if they would like to share their email address with the library they selected (Yes/No). They can change their settings by going to ‘Account Settings’ and then ‘Update Email Sharing.’ The images to the right show the setting update screens.

  14. Add books - by searching Books can be entered manually by typing in titles or by scanning the UPC code (not the library bar code). If searching for a book via keyword, Google API (the source we connect to) will likely return a list of results. The user then selects which book to add to the book list. The screen to the right shows a book as been added successfully.

  15. Add books - by scanning We have a very limited selection of books here at the system so please forgive our example. The user will go to the ‘Add Books’ screen and select the ‘Scan Book’ button. A built in scanner will appear and will scan the UPC code (not library bar code of the book). If it is found, it will display quickly in the results (shown on right). If it is not found, the book can be added manually.

  16. Add books – add book manually At times books can not be found using the search or scan feature. These books can be added manually by clicking the ‘Add book manually’ button. An Add Custom Book screen displays and title, author and ISBN can be added to create the book record in the app. Tap the ‘Add Book’ button when finished.

  17. Book list Search bar Users have asked us to add a feature that allows them to search for and then add a book again. Version 2.0 includes a search bar and a ‘Click for options’ feature that allows the user to re-add the book or delete the book. The picture to the right shows that a book was re-added. Kalos Beginner’s Handbook was read on August 20th and again on August 29th.

  18. Book list - options • Some requested features of the app include: • Email Book List – this will auto generate an email with the book list in the body (see image to the right). The email address will auto populate with the user’s email address but it can be changed to any email address. Parents/caregivers can then format and print this list if they wish. • Sort by: Date Read (Old to New), meaning most recent, least recent • Sort by: Title (A to Z) and then flips to Title (Z to A) • Sort by: Author (A to Z) and then flips to Title (Z to A)

Achievements • Because libraries offer different incentives for different levels of completion, the achievements in the app do not line up with any particular 1000 Books before Kindergarten programoffered in a library. • When an achievement is met, the ribbon will appear in full color. In a future release, all the ribbons will display the number of books read within the ribbon (as seen to the left with ’50 books’)

  20. Achievements - sharing • Achievements (bragging rights!) can be shared via social media. Tap an achievement and a ‘share’ button will appear. Currently we have Twitter and Facebook configured for sharing (see images to the right). The user must also have the Twitter and/or Facebook apps downloaded in order to share from this screen.

  21. Early literacy tips After logging in, the user will always be presented with an early literacy tip. These tips are pre-loaded and will refresh each time the user loads up the app.

  22. Override – shh! • If a user would like to transition from the paper and pencil model of the program to the app, their child’s reading record can be caught up on the app. We have created a library override for this purpose. We ask that you do not share the process with the user, but rather, ask if you can handle their device for just a moment. • With the app open, go to the ‘Account Settings’ screen and press and hold anywhere in the lower left quadrant to bring up the override. It will ask if you would like to add 25, 50, or 100 books to the child’s book list. Library staff can repeat this process as many times as is necessary to get the child up to speed. Please note, the individual book titles will not be listed when the override is used.

  23. events 2 • An RSS feed is available to display library events if they meet certain RSS criteria. Angela from Bridges Library System will be contacting each participating library system with details. The sample shown here is Fond du Lac Public Library. See the series of clicks in image 1 (to the left), 2 and then 3 (to the right). • If a library does not have an RSS feed, the events tab will not show to the user. 1 3

  24. troubleshooting • The best advice I ever received when dealing with anything technology is to turn it off and turn it on again. If the app gets stuck, close out the app completely (make sure it is not running in the background), and then re-open it. This usually clears the errors. • If a problem persists, contact Angela @ the Bridges Library System.
