Legacy of Service • Outreach and service are deeply ingrained in UGA’s history • UGA designated land-grant status in 1872 and sea-grant status in 1980 • Outreach is an equal part, along with research and instruction, of UGA’s mission
Mission • Improve quality of life in Georgia and beyond by: • Helping create jobs and prosperity • Developing the state’s leaders • Solving critical challenges related to the environment, public health, governance, economic development, and education
Organization Outreach is carried out through colleges and schools and 8 diverse Public Service units • Archway Partnership • Carl Vinson Institute of Government • J. W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development • Marine Outreach Programs (Marine Extension Service; Georgia Sea Grant) • Office of Service-Learning • Small Business Development Center • State Botanical Garden of Georgia • UGA Center for Continuing Education
Organization • The nation’s largest and most extensive outreach and service infrastructure • Public Service Faculty track – 500 faculty throughout the state • Physical infrastructure across Georgia • Web of relationships that benefit the University • Partnerships with governments, businesses, education, communities
UGA as an Engaged Institution • Deliberately engage students and academic faculty in outreach partnerships • $1 million in funding for 68 graduate assistantships focused on outreach • 300 undergraduate students in internship or outreach experiences • 6,500 students in service-learning courses • 224,000 student “service hours” to communities through SL courses
Value to UGA • Overcome Ivory Tower stereotype: • Link programs and services to state policy agenda: economic development, workforce development, access to water resources, obesity, k-12 school governance • Provide students with real-world experiences and skills so they are workforce ready • Provide access to UGA to constituencies that otherwise would not interact with the state’s flagship institution

UGA as an Engaged Institution • The role of Public Service is to: • Serve as catalyst, connector, and facilitator. • Be the “face” of UGA across Georgia • To ensure UGA is having a direct and sustained impact on the state.
