The Skeletal System • Function- Holds organs in place, provides structural support, stores minerals and generates new blood cells • Organs- periosteum, cartilage, joint, and ligament • periosteum- contains blood vessels that transport nutrients into the bone • Cartilage- tough, flexible tissue similar to bone but is softer and less brittle • Joint- any place where 2 or more bones come together; can be movable or immovable • Ligament- holds bones together at joints • The skeletal system does not interact with any other system
The Circulatory System Function- Circulates blood through body, supplies oxygen and nutrients, and removes waste Organs- atrium, ventricle, artery, vein, and capillary Atrium-contract at the same time during a heartbeat (upper chambers) Ventricle- contract at the same time during a heartbeat (lower chambers) Artery- blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart Vein- blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart Capillary- microscopic blood vessel that connects arteries and veins The Circulatory System interacts with The Respiratory System
The Respiratory System Function- when you breathe, the air you inhale supplies oxygen to the blood and gets rid of carbon dioxide Organs- pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, alveoli, and diaphragm Pharynx- provides a passage way for food, liquid, and air Larynx- provides an airway for oxygen from the vocal cords Trachea- air-conducting tube that connects the larynx with the bronchi Bronchi- carries air into the lungs Alveoli- area where carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange take place Diaphragm- contracts and relaxes to move gasses in and out of the body The Respiratory system interacts with The Circulatory System and the Digestive System
The Digestive System Function- Breaks down food to make absorption into the body possible Organs- enzyme, peristalsis, and villi Enzyme- Speeds up the rate of Chemical Reactions in the body Peristalsis- waves of muscular contractions that move food through the Digestive system Villi- increases the surface area for absorption of nutrient molecules The Digestive System does not interact with any other system
The Endocrine System • Function- Regulates body by secreting hormones into the bloodstream • Organs- Hormone • Hormones- can speed up or slow down cellular activities • The Endocrine System does not interact with any other system
