  1. Bellringer • What is gravity? How do you know gravity exists?

  2. Answer • Gravity is an attractive force that exists between all objects that have mass. Answers will vary for second question.

  3. Friday March 7, 2014 • Objective: SW understand that gravity is a force that governs the motion of our solar system.

  4. Gravity and Planetary Motion

  5. Isaac Newton • Sir Isaac Newton was one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians that ever lived. • Isaac Newton was the first person to hypothesize that the force that pulls an apple to the ground also pulls the moon toward Earth, keeping it in orbit.

  6. Force • A force is a push or a pull. • Force gives an object the energy to move, stop moving, or change direction. • We would never be able to move without exerting forces on things.

  7. Gravity • Newton was the first person to seriously study gravity • Gravity is a force that attracts all objects toward each other. • The force of gravity is measured in units called Newtons (N).

  8. Gravity • The strength of gravity between two objects depends on two factors: • 1.masses of the objects (If mass increases, force also increases) • 2.distance between the objects (If distance increases, force decreases)

  9. Gravity

  10. Gravity • The greater the mass, the greater the force • The greater the distance, the lessthe force • Acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s2

  11. Mass vs. Weight • Mass- is the amount of matter in an object • Weight- is the force of gravity on an object • The greater the mass the greater the force (weight)

  12. Why do Earth and the moon remain in their orbits? • Inertia and gravity combine to keep Earth in orbit around the sun and the moon in orbit around the Earth. • A combination of gravity and inertia keeps the moon in orbit around the Earth. If there were no gravity, inertia would cause the moon to travel in a straight line. If only gravity existed, the earth would be pulled into the sun.

  13. Graphic Organizer • Model factors that affect the force of gravity. Draw circles to represent masses as described.

  14. Independent Practice • SW create frayer models for the following vocabulary terms: • Gravity- an attractive force that exists between all objects that have mass. • Orbit- the path that a body follows as it travels around another body in space.

  15. Exit Slip • How does gravity affect objects?
