Types of Professional Presentations • Informative/Training– audience has little info – so needs some! • Briefing – has knowledge of subject – need details • Technical Reports – process or procedure oriented • Professional Papers – usually research paper – for presentation to others in your field
Persuasive Presentations • Speech of Conviction – to get others to agree • Speech of Actuation – to get others to act • Argument – budget requests, competition for resources • Sales – well, just what it says!
Special Occasion Presentations • Speech of Welcome • Speech of Presentation • Speech of Acceptance • After Dinner Speaking • Motivational Speaking • Speech of Introduction
What to Consider • Technology – needed? How used? • Visual Aids • Types of Support (examples, Statistics, Testimony • Handouts • Question-and-answer session
Speech Assignment • Speech of Introduction: A. Focus is on the person you are presenting, not you B. Who the speaker is – brief biography C. Topic of the speaker’s presentation and why the audience needs to listen D. Speaker’s Qualifications for speaking on this subject E. Why THIS speaker has been invited to speak to this audience
ADVICE • Know how to pronounce the speaker’s name • Use the speaker’s name at least twice • Avoid trite phrases: “I’m sure you will enjoy this presentation” or “it is an honor and a privilege…”etc. • Do not embarrass the speaker • MAXIMUM of 5 minutes.
Your Assignment – 1 • Select a person you would like to introduce • Can be a historic individual – real or fictional • Research the persons biography • Create a topic which this person would speak about to THIS class • Your speech must be 4 – 5 minutes in length • You must email or in writing submit to me the name of the person you will introduce – to receive my approval (by Sept 19)
Your Assignment – 2 • You will have an outline to give me when you get up to speak – it will have your name and the name of speaker you are presenting • You will practice your presentation
Your Assignment – 3 • Outline Format that you will use • Introduction • Tell the audience your name and purpose • Who is the speaker • Why this speaker • What this speaker will talk about • Body • Speakers background and qualifications • Any additional info/story about the person that is appropriate • Conclusion • Mention speaker’s name again • Invite the speaker to the platform
