WP5 Strategy Domenico Giardini SED ETHZ
WP5 Objectives • Harmonize national implementation • Integrate the European scientific community • Establish Centres of Excellence • Ensure the socio-economic added value of EPOS • Link with other European and global initiatives • Plan high-quality services to users • Ensure mobility and promote TA • Analyze the landscape and identify gaps • Design the next generation of RIs
Elements for the EPOS strategic framework • Establish the strategic framework for the construction and operational phase 2015-2040 • Position Europe in a global context • Anticipate the new priorities of the EU • Prepare the integration of national infrastructures and of existing European organizations: ORFEUS, EMSC, EFEHR • Incorporate on-going developments in European projects (NERA, QUEST, SHARE, EMSO, ICOS …) • Establish a roadmap for the EPOS domain for the EU, prioritize calls for FP8 and enable the next generation of EU projects • Link the work of WP2-4 and of the Working Groups of WP6 in a single framework

Task 5.1 – Integrating and building the EPOS distributed research infrastructures Task Leader: ETHZ, relevant contributions by INGV, IMO, UU, GSI The goal is to integrate the national implementation plans for the different infrastructure components of EPOS in a harmonized European EPOS roadmap. This task will lead the strategic work and will contribute to the logistic work in collaboration with WP6 to define the EPOS Core services and to design the network of EPOS Data Centres for each disciplinary data set. This will guarantee that EPOS will follow a multidisciplinary approach for the data infrastructures and services. The optimal utilization of existing infrastructures together with strategic upgrades and implementations of pan-European shared resources is the key to reach these goals. This task will also
Task 5.2 – Integrating the European solid Earth scientific community Task Leader: CSIC, relevant contributions by VUA, IMO, UU, IST The necessary integration of the European Solid Earth community requires us to devise a strategy and concrete measures to bring together the scientific communities working with the different EPOS components, to surpass disciplinary boundaries and organizational challenges and reap the benefits of the EPOS integration. Providing data services that span the various research infrastructures and national borders requires the proper understanding of user needs and collaboration attitude among all the stakeholders. EPOS will give a particular attention to countries and geographic areas not yet fully developed in the associated research field.
Task 5.3 – Link with other European and global initiatives Task Leader: VUA, relevant contributions by NERC(BGS), CNRS, INGV, ORFEUS EPOS is a long-term integration plan for solid Earth Science that will provide the distributed research infrastructure for monitoring tectonic processes and associated phenomena to the global Earth observation system. Because of its nature and its goals, it is fundamental to maintain and implement the dialogue and define the strategy for the technical integration of the global components as well as other major European infrastructures, such as including GMES/GEO and EMSO. Similarly, interactions and collaborations with other global initiatives (such as EarthScope in USA, Earth Simulator in Japan, interoperable geological data at global scale as exemplified in OneGeology will be promoted. Collaboration needs to be supported at different levels: within our research community and partners as well as between different research communities by providing novel and appropriate ICT services.
Task 5.4 – Ensuring the socio-economic added value of EPOS Task Leader: ETHZ, relevant contributions by UiB, Tubitak, NOA This task aim to establish a dialogue between the private and public sectors in fields related to EPOS to design the correct metrics to evaluate the socio-economic benefit and the added value achieved by the EPOS integrative efforts. This task will follow the interactions with all stakeholders in order to guarantee the understanding of the EPOS added value. A close collaboration with WP8 will be established.
Task 5.5 – Planning of high quality services to users and training programs Task Leader: ORFEUS, relevant contributions by GFZ, GSI, NERC(BGS) The goal is to define user requirements for integrated European-scale services, to identify structures and procedures to enable the provision of high-quality services to all classes of users as well as to devise strategies to ensure the continued upgrade of these services as well as the long-term support for the service provision. This task will also design appropriate strategies and measures to enable an optimal access to all the EPOS components and infrastructures. The task will be carried out in close cooperation with WP3, WP6 and WP8.
Task 5.6 – Identifying the next generation of solid Earth Research Infrastructures Task Leader: ETHZ The vision is to identify critical missing components or technologies in the national implementations and in the European integrated infrastructure coverage; focus on the integration of the different technologies. The task is to maintain the European infrastructure to the most modern technological standards, by ensuring the timely identification of promising new technologies, promoting their development and ensuring their widespread installation. An important role will be to extend the reach of solid-earth geophysical infrastructure to environmental problems and geo-hazards, which may be reflected in changes in Earth surface dynamics.
