I. Ethnic and Religious Conflicts • Ethnic and Religious differences have often led to conflicts • This happens when members of one ethnic or religious group feel discriminated against

Sri Lanka vs. Canada • Sri Lanka • Sinhalese Buddhists made Sinhalese official language, government support for Buddhism • Excluded the Hindu Tamils from power • Led to a civil war • Canada • French Speaking Quebec felt Canada treated them unfairly • Used democratic means to support for Quebec, avoided violent conflict
III. Northern Ireland • Northern Ireland remained part of Britain • Minority Catholics faced discrimination from Britain • Irish Republic Army (IRA) carried out attacks on Protestants • Peace talks in 1998 resulted in the Good Friday agreement
IV. Yugoslavia Breaks Apart • Yugoslavia was multiethnic • Serbs had dominated with Soviet Power • After fall of Soviet Union in 1991 pieces began breaking away

V. Kosovo • Kosovo- part of Serbia, mostly ethnic Albanian • Serbian President began oppressing Albanians, tried ethnic cleansing • NATO air strikes force Serbia to withdraw • Placed under UN control since 1999
