  6. Mehmed II • Murad’s son • Mehmed the Conquerer • Took power in 1451 • Defeated and took over Constantinople (Istanbul) – 1453 • Very open to a variety of religions

  7. Selim the grim • Power taken in 1512 • Won many battles through Persia, Middle East, and N Africa • Won Cairo

Suleyman • Son of Selim the Grim • Began rule in 1520 • Called Suleyman the Lawgiver by his people – In the west called Suleyman the Magnificent • Took many cities along the N African coastline (Tripoli) • Attacked Central Europe – scared all of Europe • Very impressive in that he was able to control such vast lands and peoples • Law codes to rule the people, simple tax code, freedom of worship • Killed his own son and close relatives to maintain power • Lead to the downfall of the Ott Empire
