6. Anmore Elementary – Jen Whiffin – Laptops and Social Responsibility I embarked on a Social Responsibility project with strong links to Language Arts and Numeracy, which continues to be done solely on the laptops. Through the microloan website, Kiva, my students loan small portions of class-raised money to individuals who wish to start or expand small businesses from various developing nations around the world. I love that I can give my students the opportunity to express themselves in such varied ways. Who knows what hidden talents will surface! I can’t imagine this project being as meaningful and educationally rich without the use of our ten MacBooks. They have learned to interpret the significance of statistics such as GDP per capita, life expectancy, infant mortality rate, literacy rate and population below poverty line. The level of engagement that my students show in sifting through columns of data continues to astound me. My students base their decisions on how needy they determine the country to be, the family situation of the individual requesting the loan, and the impact they believe the small business will have on the community. They beg for their turn to write about their decisions. In fact, there have been times when “Writing” was listed on the schedule for the day and met with applause from the class when they realized they would be writing paragraphs about Kiva using the laptops!

17. Benefits – SCHOOL OPERATION Every bit of paper (field trip request forms, parent letters, anecdotal reports etc) are all stored for staff use from any internet based computer. All bookings of rooms and the bus are done through our portal. We can publish information to parents, students and teachers when we want or need to – not just when our printing schedule permits. We know this has an impact … when it doesn’t work, we hear about it! Parents have access to our changing calendar – no longer reliant on the August calendar and monthly newsletter updates. Important Announcements are placed here to be visible long after an email may have been deleted and we can tailor any of this to target groups. Parents are getting used to checking the portal more often first before calling us for information. The school calendar is always accessible and updated as needed. Staff see this every time they log into the internet. my43 is a virtual community that transforms the learning and work in our School District to prepare students for the future

18. Benefits – SCHOOL PRINCIPALS Allows me to document the year – keeps a permanent record of our calendar, activities & announcements. A place for positive public relations for the school and public education in general. 19. Benefits – COLLABORATION Use of wikis / discussion boards / surveys with staff around school professional development topics. . Teachers classrooms have opened up in a way I would have never predicted. Staff who would feel very uncomfortable having a colleague watch them seem fine with others probing around on their website.
