English HSTC:-- Serve high school seniors who do not meet English and/or reading benchmark on the junior-year ACT.
Benefits of the English HSTC: - Allows the opportunity for students to start college in 100-level courses- Allows for more support and time for those students who may be struggling
HSTC curriculum in a nutshell: - Essentially uses the curriculum for developmental courses at EKU- There is flexibility to how this is incorporated: stand-alone or hybrid- Focuses on fundamental reading and writing strategies, responding to texts, and clearly stating an opinion
English HSTC textbook:Mercury Readers - Allows for creation of a textbook specific to your course
EKU ENG 101R: Composition & Reading The Plan – To move students with composition & reading CR needs toward credit-bearing coursework and quick completion.
Inspiration:-- Composition students often have reading needs-- Studies that indicate students who complete CR needs in a for-credit class stick around to graduate
ENG 101R curriculum in a nutshell:- A review of sentence basics & methods of development- Persuasion in written discourse- Practice in composition for different purposes , audiences- Critical reading skills- Critical thinking & quantitative reasoning
