Cold War (1945-1991-)conflict, with no fighting, between USA/Democracy and Soviet Union/Russia/ Communism • FLT- students will identify the two countries engaged in the Cold War and understand the difference between the two countries engaged in the Cold War, as well as, the real life effects of Communism through a demonstration and short paragraph. • 1) Prior Knowledge- Is the US in danger of being attacked today? By who? How? Do you feel threatened?

(explain) Sentence Starters: • In my opinion, The U.S. is/is not in danger of being attacked today by________, because_______. • I think they would attack the U.S. using________. • Based on this information, I do/ do not feel threatened because_____.

Cold War (1945-1991) diplomatic confrontation, without battles, between…US/Democracy vs. Soviet Union/Communism • Communism believes the Government should control everything and share every thing equally (equal pay, no private property, no rich, no poor) • Communism no freedom (not allowed to leave) and no religion US mistrusts communism (claims it will eventually take over the world- workers/poor will rise up against the owners/rich) • Stalin killed his own people up to 20 mil. who spoke out against his Gov. (gulag- political prisoners not killed were sent to Siberia) Should the US fear or try to stop Communist expansion? Explain

Iron Curtain- Eastern European countries that Stalin forces to become Communist • Stalin- has troops in Eastern Europe and keeps them under Soviet control after WWII (does not set them free) • Buffer Zone- Stalin wanted a safety area to prevent another invasion of Soviet Union • *Countries- Poland, CZechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary • What is the best way to allow people of a country to make the decision to become Communist? Were they given that chance? Or • What do you think life will be like for the people in those countries? Why?

Germany- split into 4 zones controlled by US, Eng., France, and USSR • Germany is divided into two countries • West Germany-(Democratic) 3 zones controlled by US, Eng. and France become one country • East Germany (Communist) controlled by Russia • Berlin- split into 4 zones • West Berlin (Dem.) part of West Germany but located in East Germany • ?What is so unique about West Berlin? • *island of democracy surrounded by communism • East Berlin (Communist) • If you did not like Communism and lived in East Berlin, what could you do to improve your situation?

The (Berlin Wall) • August 13, 1961, East Germany began to block off East Berlin from West Berlin by means of barbed wire and antitank obstacles. • Streets were torn up, and barricades of paving stones were erected. • Tanks gathered at crucial places. • The subway and local railway services between East and West Berlin were interrupted. • Inhabitants of East Berlin and the GDR were no longer allowed to enter West Berlin • At least 100 people were killed at the Berlin Wall, the last of them was Chris Gueffroy (June 2, 1989). • Evaluate what building a wall for “protection” says about a country?

Berlin Wall Simulation (Capitalism v Communism) • Everyone help move the desks to the middle of the room to create a wall (stay on your side) • East Berlin (Communist)- pull a chair to the windows and sit down • West Berlin (Democratic)- sit anywhere you want on your sit • Candy • West Berlin- have some candy (capitalism- people are free to work as hard as they want to earn what they can get, they also have freedom of choice/selection • East Berlin- have some candy (line up and I/the government will give you your piece • Explain how both hand outs of candy show the difference between Communism and Capitalism • Daily Life • West Berlin- please grab some paper and create graffiti or slogans about why you hate Communism and what it’s doing to your friends (feel free to take out your phones and listen to music) • East Berlin (grab a book and define the terms on the board) write the definition on the board)

  12. Chart: Two Superpowers Face Off • Directions: read section ch.17 section 1 pages 475-480 • Take notes ( 1-2 items per box) to explain how each of the actions or policies( each box) led to the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Paragraph Response • S1Topic Sentence- Identify the two countries in the Cold War and identify the economic system associated with each country (Capitalism and Communism) • S2Evidence #1- Identify on aspect of Communism (what was one restriction of living in East Berlin) • S3Explanation#1- explain why that aspect of Communism is unfair? • S4- Evidence #2- Identify one aspect of Capitalism/Democracy (what did you see on the West Berlin side of the demonstration) • S5- Explanation #2- Explain why that aspect of capitalism is important to you? • S6- Concluding Sentence- Evaluate if the US has a responsibility to prevent the spread of Communism around the world. • S7- Concluding Sentence #2- What is the best way the US can try and stop the spread of Communism?
