  2. Latitude The east-west lines parallel to the Equator used to measure the distance in degrees north and south, from 0º at the Equator to 90º north and south at the poles.

  3. It is measured in degrees, beginning at the equator. Latitude ranges from 0o to 90 o north or south. Accord, NY is north latitude, while Durban, South Africa is south latitude.

  4. Each degree of latitude or longitude consists of 60 equal parts or minutes. One minute equals 60 seconds. Using degrees, minutes, and seconds, the latitude and longitude of Accord is… 41 o 46’ 48” N 79 o 55’ 48”W

  5. 41 degrees 49 minutes North • 74 degrees 15 minutes West

  6. Positions east or west along a circle of latitude are located on meridians. Each is a half circle running from pole to pole. By international agreement, the reference meridian is called theprime meridian. It passes through Greenwich England.

  7. Longitude North-south lines running between the poles, used to measure distance in degrees east and west of thePrime Meridian, from 0º at the prime meridian to 180º east and west.

  8. Longitude measured in degrees, beginning at the prime meridian. Longitude ranges from 0 o to 180 o east or west. Accord is west longitude, while New Delhi, India is east longitude. Distance covered by a degree of longitude depends on where the degree is measured. At the equator, it is approximately 111 km, The closer you are to the poles, the smaller this distance. (For example, at 60 o N, the distance is 55 km, at 80 o N, it is 20 km.
