The Ontario Application Process • All Applications to OUAC • Ontario University Application Centre • Application cost - $150 • For 3 university/program choices – it will cost $50 to change a university once you have paid originally • Additional programs $50 • All applications are done on-line. • You must have an access code and a password before you can do the application. These are available in Guidance in early November. • Recommended to make an appointment in Guidance before applying. • Application deadline January 16, 2019 • Recommend to be done before Christmas holidays

  3. Changing Choices • Changing program choice will result in a cost (unless it is at the same university) • Be sure of choices before submitting application

  4. Communication • Get an e-mail address before you apply (it should be appropriate) and make sure guidance has it. If you change it, let Guidance know. • Check it often after you apply • This is the way OUAC, the universities and Guidance prefer to communicate with you

What EESS sends • November • Student Demographic information • Final marks of completed grade 11 and 12 courses • First and second semester courses you are currently signed up for • Community involvement and literacy test info • February • First semester final marks • Update semester 2 courses • April • Second semester mid term marks • July • Final second semester marks • Proof of graduation

  7. Admission Requirements • Admission is based on your university admission average • Your 6 grade 12 U or M courses • ENG 4U1 is a must. (very few exceptions) • Different programs have different required courses (English, Math, Science) • Different universities have different required courses • There are recommended courses as well for each program

Early Admission • You may be offered early admission before semester 2 mid-terms if: • You have completed a number of university admission courses. • You have very good grade 11 marks. • Do not panicif you don’t get early admission • It just means they are going to wait for your 4U and 4M semester 2 marks • Universities vary as to how many early offers they make each year

Prerequisites • Brock University • Faculty of Applied Health Science • Kinesiology (BKin) • ENG 4U1; SBI 4U1; One 4U Math (MHF 4U preferred) • Recommended PSE 4U1 or PSK 4U1, MHF 4U1 • Basis of Offers • Six grade 12 U or M Courses including required courses • Last year’s admission average: low 80s

Prerequisites • Brock University • Faculty of Applied Health Science • Kinesiology (BScKin) • ENG 4U1 • MHF 4U1 (min 70%) ORMCV 4U1 (min 70%) • SBI 4U1 • Strongly Recommended SPH 4U1, PSE4U1 or PSK4U1, SCH4U1 • Basis of Offers: • Six grade 12 U or M Courses including required courses • Last year’s admission average: high 70s • Note difference between BKin and BScKin • Required means you must have • Recommended means it may be helpful

  11. Admission Averages • Averages may vary from year to year • Usually not more than one or two percent • U of Guelph • Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours • 78% – 83% except Bio-Medical Science which is 84% -- 89% • This is last year’s average. It may vary slightly for this year.

Admission Averages Con’t • Western University • Health Sciences: • ENG4U, SBI4U, one 4U Math • Recommended: SCH4U • Last year’s admission average: high 80s • Medical Sciences: • ENG4U, SBI4U, SCH4U, MCV4U (which means you have to have MHF4U) • Recommended: SPH4U • Last year’s admission average: low 90s

  13. Co-op Programs • Some programs have a co-op component. • These co-op programs usually have higher tuition. • There is no guarantee that you will get a co-op placement. • The co-op option gives you access to the university’s co-op employer list. • Most co-op placements are paid positions which can offset the cost of your education.

Additional Admission Criteria • See e-!NFO www.electronicinfo.ca • You may need: • letters of reference • Portfolio • Supplementary Information Form or Personal Statement of Experience • Resume • Audition • Interview • These all have deadlines and are your responsibility (check your email from the universities)

Alternate offers of admission • A few universities will offer you admission to an alternate program if your marks are not high enough to get into your first choice. • See e-INFO www.electronicinfo.ca • Each school is different therefore: • We recommend you bring letter/email offers of alternate program to guidance to review what they truly mean

One offer only from each school • Most schools will only consider you for one program at a time. • The university/program that is your number one choice should be the one you put highest on the application form (be realistic – check last year’s admission average of your choices) • The second program at one university will only be considered if you are not accepted to the first one.

  17. Deferral • Deferral = postpone • Some universities may allow applicants to request a deferral. This is something you must communicate to the University. They will likely require written communication.

  18. Undergraduate Studies • In your first 3 or 4 years of university you are called an undergraduate and are usually earning a Bachelor degree. (BA, BSc) • Once you have completed a Bachelor degree you are a graduate and may pursue graduate studies i.e. a masters degree. (MA, MSc)

Faculties • When you apply, it is usually to a faculty • Faculty of Arts • Faculty of Social Science • Faculty of Science • You may be asked to indicate your subject of major interest i.e. Biology or Chemistry or use different codes for different choices within the faculty. • You are not tied down to this choice • Do NOT apply to the same faculty twice

  20. Education Consecutive • If you might want to teach but that isn’t your only focus. You complete a degree first and then apply to teacher’s college after. Concurrent • If your purpose is to become a teacher. You will begin teacher training in your second year while you complete your degree.

  21. Education • Primary/Junior • JK to 6 • Junior/Intermediate • Grade 4 to grade 10 • Intermediate/Senior • Grade 7 to 12

Timelines • September to November • Research and attend information sessions – University Fair at PCI Monday November 5th – buses sign-up in Guidance • End of November • Receive access code and pin • December • Apply on-line • January 16, 2019 • Application Deadline • May 29, 2019 • Last date to expect a response from an Ontario University • June 3, 2019 • Earliest date a university can require a response • Late May to Early June 2019 • Respond to an offer of admission

  24. Research • Check the bulletin boards, emails and binders in Guidance • New Programs • Open Houses • Preview Days • Make an appointment with your guidance counsellor

  25. Applied Degrees • These are degrees that are granted by Colleges. • They combine the theoretical education of the university with the more practical education of the college. • Admission is the same as for university (6, 4U or 4M courses). • These are applied to through OCAS, not OUAC.

  30. Royal Military College • The Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) is not part of OUAC. A separate form and additional application materials must be obtained from the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre. Out of Province • Each school is applied to individually and directly • Each school has its own application and fees • Costs and requirements are similar to Ontario • Some eastern universities may only need 5 admission courses rather than 6 • Research all Canada’s universities on the internet and take note of all important dates

  32. Out of Province • Please let Shelley in Guidance know where you apply & accept. • OUAC provides academic data to: • Bishop’s Concordia Simon Fraser U • McGill Dalhousie U. of Calgary • U.B.C U. Victoria St. Mary’s U • U. New Brunswick Acadia • You must authorize OUAC to release your info on your application • You must put your OUAC # on the out-of-province application. • Shelley will mail official transcripts to all other out-of -province universities not listed (be sure to allow time)

Out of Canada • Each school has separate applications and fees • An SAT score is a likely requirement • Each school will set its’ own SAT score • The SAT can no longer be written in London please check out the SAT website for locations available • Registration on-line in advance is required • If you apply to a school outside of Canada let Shelley in Guidance know.

Scholarships • Entrance scholarships • Automatic…based on admission average • University scholarships needing application • Check the university web site or look on e-!NFO • Foundation scholarships (ie Terry Fox, Loran) • Usually need high marks and outstanding community service. • You may need to be nominated by the school.

  35. Scholarships • Business scholarships (ie NRG) • EESS commencement awards • Selected by committee • Fill out online form found on the EESS website (available in December) • Thames Valley DSB awards • Nomination by the school • Separate application usually required
