Language Arts Goals • Students will become more independent in their work. • Students will be exposed to fiction and nonfiction text across many genres. • Students will determine what an author is trying to say while drawing their own conclusions, asking questions, and thinking critically. Going beyond the text. • Students will be exposed to different types of writing (expository, narrative, persuasive) and be expected to compose each type of writing.

  3. Textbooks • Reading—Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes (Prentice Hall Literature) • English—Writing and Grammar, Communications in Action (Prentice Hall) • Vocabulary - Sadlier Oxford Vocabulary Workshop

  5. School & Classroom Policies • Students must follow all policies stated in the student handbook. • General Classroom Rules: -Be Responsible. Come to class prepared. -Be Respectful. No talking while teacher or others are speaking. -Be Responsible. Be in your seat when the bell rings. -Be Responsible. Make complete efforts on all assignments; plagiarism results in zero scores.

  6. Grading A = 90 - 100% B = 80 - 89 % C = 70 - 79% D = 60 - 69% F = 59% and below

  7. Grade Weighting Student grades are weighted as follows: • Homework/class work – 15% • Formative (Quiz, project) – 40% • Summative (Test, major project, major writing assignment) – 45%

  8. Late Assignments • NO EXCEPTIONS • One day late = 70% credit • Two days or more late = 0% credit

  9. Quarterly Projects • Students will be given class time to choose an AR book from the library. They will also be given the time to take the AR test of the book they read. • 1st Quarter = 1 book and project • 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quarter = 2 books and projects each quarter • Projects will be assigned with ample time given to complete them. • Students should have their 1st Quarter book chosen. The project for this quarter is a story map.

Changes • Students will be reading an equal amount of fiction and nonfiction. • Students will be build knowledge through reading. • Students will be required to read more challenging material. • Students will be able to discuss material and provide evidence for statements made about a text. • Students will be able to write non-fiction (expository) and use evidence to prove their statements. • Students will increase academic vocabulary. • Examples: 8th Grade Parent Roadmap
