Huge campaigns were made to encourage workers to raise productivity as a response to the First Five-Year Plan as its rate was unacceptably low. • Shock-brigade campaigns were held in hope of intensive efforts to build structures. E.g: dams • Socialist competition tried to raise work norm, but only enjoyed limited success. • One of the most significant way of propaganda was the Stakhanovite Movement
Stakhanov Record • Alexi Stakhanov (pneumatic- pick operator) • August 30th 1935 - within Five hours of work he cut 102 tons of Coal (16 times the norm of 6.5 tons per shift) • Stakhanov and his support team cut twice the amount that eight miners would have produced
Lead up • People wanted to beat Stakhanov’s record • It was a positive response for the Party • By 5 September- 2 had beaten the record. • By December 1935- the records achieved in heavy industry alone filled 2 volumes.
Rewards • 200 roubles instead of the normal 30 roubles • A bonus equaled to a month’s wage • An apartment reserved for technical personnel with a telephone and comfortable furniture • Passes to the cinema and live performances at the local workers’ club • Places at a holiday resort • The worker’s name would be displayed on the mine’s honour board
Comments of the Stakhanov Movement • Seen as a way of compelling management to adopt new production methods and increase rates of production. • Those who were seen as unwilling were called saboteurs with the warning ‘Such pseudo leaders must be removed immediately’. • Improved the productivity rates but caused some problems in the economy.
