BTEC First Certificate Performing Arts Level 2
What is the BTEC all about? • BTEC Firsts are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of working areas. • They give you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for employment. • On successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, you can progress onto higher BTEC courses
Why are we doing it in year 9? • You have been chosen especially to trial this exciting new qualification and as students of a Performing Arts College, your have a unique opportunity to achieve great things in this area. • Longcroft will soon offer BTEC qualifications in other subjects and levels across the school. • This is a great opportunity to get a head start in year 9
What do I get out of it? • The BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts is equal to one GCSE grade A-C. The grading is in 3 parts as follows: • Pass = C grade at GCSE • Merit = B grade at GCSE • Distinction = A grade at GCSE • You must achieve the same level in all tasks in order to achieve that level overall.
What work is involved? • You will be expected to work very hard, as a group and individually. • There will be a mixture of practical tasks, research tasks and written tasks. • You will learn lots of new skills not only within the Performing Arts, but that will help you in other subjects. • You will be expected to meet deadlines and targets set by your teacher. • Work is based in the classroom, ICT suite or at home as part of your extended study. • The tasks allow you to work quite independently
How will it be delivered? • There are TWO units to be covered in Year 9 • Unit A1 will be delivered in the first half term of school and will be taught across your 3 Performing Arts subjects – Dance Drama and Music • Your 3 teachers will be working very closely together to ensure that you achieve your potential. • Tasks will be a mixture of practical, written and research work and will all have a very creative element to it.
What is expected from me? • The BTEC is very exciting and fast moving so you must be efficient in your time keeping and ensure you complete all the tasks set to a good standard • Have pride in your work, remember, if your work meets the required criteria you will be entered to the exam board. • You MUST ask your teacher if you are unsure about anything from the tasks to deadlines. • Any deadlines missed must be supported by appropriate contact from your parents e.g. a note or a phone call.
