Integrated Light Microscopy and Electron Microscopy. R G B is boring. But C M Y K spells FUN!. C yan M agenta Y ellow Blac K. Plain old B / W BSE image, (OPC 24 hours). Prettier when inverted and assigned to Y K. But still kind of boring. Maybe optical microscopy can help!.

  3. But CMYK spells FUN!

  4. Cyan Magenta Yellow BlacK

  5. Plain old B/W BSE image, (OPC 24 hours).

  6. Prettier when inverted and assigned to YK.

  7. But still kind of boring.

  8. Maybe optical microscopy can help!

  9. Transmitted light.

  10. Crossed-polars.

  11. Epifluorescent mode.

  12. Let’s try transmitted light first.

  13. Take the R-channel.

  14. Return to the YK-BSE image.

  15. Assign transmitted light to C.

  16. Look at all those sky-blue opaque interstitials!

  17. Now it’s crossed-polars’ turn.

  18. Take the B-channel.

  19. Invert it.

  20. Return to the C–transmitted, YK–BSE image.

  21. Assign crossed-polars to M.

  22. CMYK!

  23. Look at all those rosy birefringent portlandites!

  24. From boring old B/W BSE…

  25. …to optically-enhanced CMYK BSE!

  26. In just seven easy steps!

  27. Almost like traditional Chinese water-color!

  47. Can I still record optical images after I’ve carbon coated?

  48. Sure, as long as the carbon coating hasn’t cracked up.

  49. Just increase the shutter speed, because everything gets darker.

  50. Transmitted light, pre-coating, 1/10,000 shutter.
