Assessments • Both internal and external, using established grading criteria • Multiple methods of assessment for each course • Varied skills tested across disciplines • Balance between independent and teacher-supervised work • Students maintain control over many aspects of assessment
Theory of Knowledge This required course begins second semester of the 11th grade and concludes first semester of the 12th grade. The TOK course is designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical, and historical).
Extended Essay 4,000-word essay on a topic of the student’s choice incorporating documented research Students select a topic, faculty mentor, and initiate the research second semester of the junior year. They have the summer and first semester of the senior year to complete the writing and revising process. Students receive assistance during TOK with deadlines for writing the essay.
CAS 150 Hours Total CREATIVITY ACTION SERVICE Each senior class selects a global service project.
To Earn the IB Diploma • Complete EE, TOK, and CAS • Complete all required assessments • Take all six courses and all six exams • Accumulate 24 points total on six exams (scored on a 1-7 scale) including bonus points from EE and TOK

College Admission Criteria • Rigorous curriculum, as well as the grades earned in these courses • Personal essay • College Admission Tests (SAT/ACT) • Community service/extracurricular activities (both on campus and off campus) • Letters of recommendation • GPA/class rank
Some College Admission Assumptions • Nearly all courses in the student’s final two years are in solid academic areas. • An admissions officer can be assured of the candidate’s strong preparation of course work in the five basic academic areas: first language, second language, social science/humanities, natural/physical sciences, and mathematics.
IB Advantages • The Extended Essay requirement validates writing and research skills. • Participation in the IB demonstrates that the student accepts rather than avoids rigorous academic challenges. • Participation in the IB strengthens a student’s confidence, social sophistication, and poise.
As of Fall 2006, TEXAS IB Graduates get College Credits If an IB Diploma recipient has scored at least 4 on each IB examination, state schools in Texas now must by law award that recipient at least 24 college credits!

We encourage 8th grade students to apply for the IB Diploma Programme and complete our Pre-IP (International Programme) courses in the 9th and 10th grades.
Importance of Pre-IP Courses • Go beyond the TEKS in depth and complexity • Are appropriately rigorous to prepare students to be successful in IB courses • Are part of a vertically-aligned series of courses that ends with an authorized IB course • Helps students to develop important time management, critical reading, and writing skills

How to Apply Applications are available on the Klein Oak website, or you may pick one up from your 8th grade counselor. Applications will be accepted beginning Feb. 28th through March 8th, 2013. Give completed application to your 8th grade counselor who will send them to the IB Coordinator. Out-of-district applications should be mailed directly to the IB Coordinator. Interviews with IB Selection Committee will take place in March. Applicants will be notified via their 8th grade counselors as to the specific date and time of the interview. Acceptance letters will be mailed to students in April. • Attend the Pre-IP Orientation in June.
