Please Note: Math Quest/ Reading Styles • Additional courses of Math Quest and/or Reading Styles will be required if STAAR scores indicate that you did not meet the passing standard. • You and your parents will be notified after STAAR results are in if these classes are required. • In this situation, it is possible that you will lose an elective.

  7. Physical Education Courses

  8. Physical Education Courses So what’s the difference? Each of these courses is a FULL YEAR commitment. There will be no schedule changes in and out of these courses.

  9. Full Year Electives • In 8th grade, you’ll have 3 elective periods each semester. • You can take Full Year Electives (fall AND spring)or Semester Electives (fall OR spring) to fill your schedule.

  10. High School Credit Courses • You’ll have a chance to start earning High School credit in 8th grade with several courses. • This means the grades you earn in 8th grade will go on your High School Transcript (record) but does not calculate into your GPA. (Except PAP Algebra 1, Algebra 1 & any full year foreign language class) • This is a great opportunity, but with it comes lots of responsibility!

  13. Middle School Art Portfolio • Pre-requisite: Art I • Intended for students who have a serious interest in studying art. • Advanced art concepts • Turn in a portfolio of various artworks during the spring semester.

  14. Pre-AP Spanish I & Spanish I • High school credit course • Develop skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking • Rigorous Spanish class • High School level of homework and class assignments • Graded using High School standards. • This is the MOST difficult class on our campus!

Middle School Theatre Production • Work closely with a director • Fine tune monologues and scenes • Experience technical theatre: stage makeup, costume design, and lighting • Participate in One Act Play Festival in the Spring • Opportunity to see and critique live theatre Who can take this class : Any CURRENT 7th grader who has taken Theatre I.

  16. PALs P.A.L.s stands for Peer Assistance and Leadership. This is a great elective for those who care deeply about others and have a strong desire to make a difference. What do PALs do? • Mentor students at the Willis Lane ES • Build friendships with ISMS students • Learn about yourself, others, and teen issues

  17. Yearbook Staff Yearbook is an elective for creative and dedicated 7th and 8th grade students wanting to capture every detail of the school year. It is a lot of hard work with many deadlines, but it is also extremely rewarding! What does Yearbook Staff do? • Write – A LOT! Articles, Titles, Announcements • Design page layouts • Function as a team – decision making, cooperation, working together to get a job done. • Take pictures at events – before, during, and after school

  21. Online Courses • Most ONLINE courses are High School Credit courses (all but 2) • Online courses are taught ONLY by an ONLINE teacher. The classroom mentor does not directly teach students. Students will be working on computers with head phones. • All teacher interaction will be through the computer (Grades, Assignments, etc.) • Students may need to complete assignments at home to stay on track. • Students must be self directed/ motivated to be successful in an online course.

German IONLINE/ French I ONLINELatin 1 ONLINE/ Spanish 1 ONLINE- All HS credit • High School Credit Courses • Intro to basic structure of language; emphasis on vocabulary • Develop skills in listening, speaking, writing • All instruction happens ONLINE…no teacher will teach in person! • Requires additional work at home. • Not all students are appropriate for an ONLINE course!

  23. Entrepreneurship(Online/HS Credit) • Principles necessary to begin and operate a business • Analyze a business opportunity • Prepare business plan • Determine if the plan is possible • How to promote a business • Not all students will be appropriate for an ONLINE course.

  24. Professional Communications(Online/HS Credit) • Meets the 21st century skill requirement for high school graduation • You will learn a solid foundation in communication in the career-based environment • Not all students will be appropriate for an ONLINE course.

Why take a Principles Course Online? • In High School you’ll pick an area of interest, and start to take some classes within that area. • The Principles classes are the initial classes to start on your “pathway”….. A pathway is an area of study. • If you’re interested in careers in any of these areas, you might consider one of these classes. It’s a great chance to see if it’s really something you might enjoy!

  26. Principles of Business, finance & Marketing Online/HS Credit Interested in a job in the business field? • Economics • Global business • Marketing of goods and services • Advertising, and product pricing • Analyze the sales process • Not all students will be appropriate for an ONLINE course.

  27. Principles of Health Science Online/HS Credit • Focus on Health Care Industry • Overview of diagnostic and support services in the health care industry • Biotechnology research and development • Not all students will be appropriate for an ONLINE course.

Touch System Data Entry Online/HS Credit • Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment. • Apply touch system data entry for production of business documents. • Not all students will be appropriate for an ONLINE course.

  29. Lifetime Nutrition Wellness(Online/HS Credit) • Teaches principles to make informed choices that promote wellness • Informs those interested in perusing a career in Human Services such a culinary arts • Not all students will be appropriate for an ONLINE course.

Personal Financial Literacy online/HS Credit • Teachers students to make informed financial decisions that will allow them to lead financially secure lifestyles and understand personal financial responsibility. • The knowledge gained in this course has far-reaching effects for students personally as well as the economy as a whole. When citizens make wise financial decisions, they gain opportunities to invest in themselves, build businesses, consume goods and services in a responsible way, and secure a future without depending on outside assistance.

Introduction to Arts, AV Production, Communication • Intro to audio/video production is an entry-level course that serves as an introduction to basic video/film/audio production. • The goal of the course is for each student to develop the ability to capture great video images and audio, and then blend those two elements together to tell a story. • In addition to creating various projects throughout the semester, students will produce the campus announcements.

  37. World Mythology • Cover multiple cultures and their myths. • Identify the characteristics of a myth and their purpose in history • Explore current pop culture trends and how they relate to mythology (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Iron Man, Thor, Batman, etc).

Discovering languages and cultures online • Students will gain an understanding of two basic aspects of human existence: the nature of communication and the complexity of culture. • Students who effectively communicate in more than one language, with an appropriate understanding of cultural context, are globally literate and possess the attributes of successful participants in the world community.

GTTArchitecture and Biomedical Sciences Green Architecture • Learn how to apply the concept of architecture and construction by exploring dimension, measuring, and architectural sustainability using 3D architectural design software. Medical Detectives • Analyze genetic testing results to diagnose diseases, and study DNA evidence found at a crime scene. • Solve medical mysteries through hands on projects and labs. IT WILL MESS UP YOUR REGISTRATION. • COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION FORM THAT IS PRE CODED FOR YOU. • REVIEW 4 CORE ACADEMIC SUBJECTS (ELA, MATH, SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES). MAKE CHANGES IF NECESSARY. • RANK ELECTIVES • APPLY FOR ANY SPECIAL ELECTIVES (AVID, JOURNALISM, PALS, ETC.)
