  1. Need for a Summer Reading Program If students do not practice reading skills during the summer they can lose those skills Learners perform better on reading tests the next school year

  2. Goals of Ready, Set, Read! Build students’ reading confidence and motivation to read Increase reading skills through techniques implemented throughout the previous school year Encourage parents and guardians to become involved with their children’s reading at home Help students become regular library users by creating an atmosphere that promotes reading and life long learning Improve students’ PSSA reading scores

  3. Participants • Read 180 • Language! • Reading Prep • 163 students targeted – 29 participants enrolled

  4. Student Groups • Divided into 3 groups • Placement dependent on reading level • Red, Level, and Green

  5. The Schedule Every Tuesday and Thursday June 7th – July 19th 9:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. BJHS Library **See calendar

  6. Session Format • Check-in (attendance desk in front of library) • Opening • Break out into groups • Lesson • Project/Activity • Snack • Closure **Students may purchase incentives with their creature cash

  7. Curriculum • Aligned with state standards • PSSA anchors • Objectives • Independent practice • Assessment of objectives • Adaptations for students

  8. Topics of Sessions Main idea Summarization Cause and effect Context clues Reading comprehension Point of view Theme Characterization

  9. Integrating Technology • Interactive websites for independent practice • PowerPoint quests – Summarization and Point of View

  10. It’s a Jungle Out There…So Pick Up a Book!

  11. Projects/Activities • Activities that benefit local animal shelters • Bird feeders, dog/cat toys, and dog/cat blankets • Pet supply drive for local animal shelters

  13. Reading Logs and Incentives • Read log card • Creature cash • Bookmark • Book chain • Incentives – books, games, DVD player, DVDs, gift cards, etc.
