Introductions • Who are you? • Why are you here? • Who are we?
Beginning to write your unit • Our units should be based on national math content strands and standards - not textbook resources • Units should be planned using a hierarchy of standards - national, state, textbook
National Standards • National Council of Teachers of Mathematics http://www.nctm.org • Principles and Standards for School Mathematics http://standards.nctm.org/ • NCTM Curriculum Focal Points Focal Points
State • Missouri Mathematics Learning Goalshttp://www.dese.mo.gov/divimprove/curriculum/math/ • Missouri Grade Level Expectationshttp://www.dese.mo.gov/divimprove/curriculum/GLE/MAgle2.0.html
Local • Textbook • Investigations
Clarifying Content Priorities • Discriminating among standards • Big Ideas and Enduring Understandings (EU) • Important to know and do (Need to know) • Worth being familiar with (Nice to know)
Modeling - what you really do! • Find standards from national, state, and local resources • Isolate the standards • Sort standards
Guided Practice • Step 1 - find standards for your grade and cut them apart • Step 2 - eliminate duplicate ideas - keep the one with broader wording • Step 3 - sort using “enduring, need, nice” and tape on your chart - chunk like items in the same area • Step 4 - form Enduring Understandings
Vertical Alignment • Identify flow of EUs from grade to grade • Create matrix of EUs and EQs
Teaching and Tuning • How do the interactions you have with your students help you tune your unit?
