Spread of Calvinism • Calvin spread his ideas in France • People from all over Europe came to learn about Calvinism and then spread the ideas • This new challenge to the Catholic Church set off many bloody battles
Henry VIII • Henry VIII was the king of England • He had stood against the Protestant Reformation • However the church and the king started to have many political disputes
Henry VIII was married to Catherine of Aragon (Spain) • They only had 1 daughter, Mary Tudor.
The Cause • Wants a son • Falls in love with Anne Boleyn • He wanted to annul his marriage • He asked the pope to annul his marriage • The pope said no • The pope did not want to upset Catherine’s nephew Emperor Charles V of the HRE.
The Break • Henry passed laws through Parliament that put the English church under the control of the king.
Anglicanism (the Church of England) • Very similar to Catholicism • Common book of prayers • tells them what to do and believe • Salvation is received through faith • Do not have saints but divines
Catholic Reformation Counter-Reformation
1530 • Reform movement within the Catholic Church • Goals were to get respect back, end the other reformations, end corruption
Council of Trent • Meet for 20 years on and off to direct the reformation • Better defined church doctrines • Banned the sale of indulgences • Disciplined the clergy
Jesuits • Soldiers of the counter-reformation • Founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1534 • Organized like the military • Stressed education • Opposed the killing of heretics
Inquisition • A court • Founded during the Middle Ages • Used secret information, torture, and execution to get rid of those who went against the church • Index of Forbidden Books
