  4. Matthew 17:14-21 The Lord be with you.   All: And also with you.Volunteer:  A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 14When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15"Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."   17"O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. 19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" 20He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."[a]

  6. Faith and Light The Church uses the image of light to describe the mystery of Faith Faith – our free response to God’s love and all that he tells us through Revelation Revelation – God communicates with us, through: Old & New Testaments His own Son, Jesus Christ We begin to see and understand life better through the light of faith Knothole & ball game analogy Science, experience are attempts to expand the knothole Faith opens the knothole to help us see the Master Designer’s intent Thoughts? Questions?

  7. Seeing and Believing The Gospel of John uses the imagery of light and darkness to describe Good News and the Kingdom Volunteer Reader: John 1 -The Word Became Flesh  1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.   3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

  8. Jesus is the Light of the World Volunteer Reader: John 3: 19 -21 Jesus instructs Nicodemus about Faith, Jesus is the Light 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

  9. What does Faith do? Spiritual Blindness: John 9:1-40 In this scripture, Jesus heals a blind man, but the people refused to believe the blind man’s testimony. They drove the blind man out of the synagogue and town. Jesus found him and said: Volunteer Reader:  35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"   36 "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."  37 Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."  38 Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.  39 Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."  40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?"

  10. Faith and Fear Jesus Stills the Storm Volunteer Reader: 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"   26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.  27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!“ What is Jesus message to the Apostles about belief? What is Christ’s message to us about fear?
