  2. Reminders • Last day to reassess for Grammar test is Friday! • Remember – you must check in prior to the day you will reassess, have your original test, and complete a reassessment study guide. • Your vocab quiz this week will be for both week #20 & week #21 on Friday

  3. Opening • Review Independent & Dependent clause homework

  4. Opening Review • What is a clause? • What is the difference between an independent and a dependent clause?

  5. Opening Review • What is a clause? • A group of words that contains a subject and a verb. • What is the difference between an independent and a dependent clause? • An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone, whereas a dependent clause does not and is a fragment.

  6. Opening • Simple Sentence: contains one independent clause and no dependent clauses. • Remember – even a simple sentence can be quite elaborate. • Ex. Shawn tutors. • Ex. Regina teaches young children acrobatics after school.

  7. Opening • Compound Sentences: contains two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses. • Ex. Shawn tutors and he helps students learn math.

  8. Opening • Independent clauses can be joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction or by a semicolon. • Ex. Some children have no books, and volunteers can hold book drives for them. • Ex. Some children have no toys; volunteers can collect donated toys for them.

  9. Opening • Identify the following sentences as simple or compound. • Justin Lebo of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, loved bikes. • He and his dad shared an interest in bicycle racing. • They had their garage set up like a bike shop; they worked there on their bikes all the time. • Justin bought a couple of rundown bikes, and he fixed them up. • The bikes looked good as new, but Justin didn’t need any more bikes himself.

Opening • Identify the following sentence as simple or compound. • He decided to donate them to the Kilbarchan Home for Boys. • Justin liked the idea of people fixing up bikes for those less fortunate, so he continued to do so in his spare time. • Many people offered him their old bikes for free. • The donations were helpful for a time, but soon Justin ran out of space in his small garage. • Justin fixed 250 bikes, and he gave them all away.

  11. Work Time • Complete the Simple versus Compound worksheet (both sides). • On the back side – change subordinating to coordinating

  12. Closing • Review worksheet. • What is the difference between a simple and compound sentence?
