SEMCOG Infrastructure Public Opinion SurveyPreliminary ResultsMarch 5, 2013
Purpose • Determine: • Public’s opinion on infrastructure condition • Understanding of source & adequacy of funding • Willingness to pay more, change behavior, and/or accept lower level of service • Inform SEMCOG’s policies & actions
Method • 1,600 residents surveyed in November 2012 • Combination phone and online survey • Results by 7 counties and City of Detroit
Overall Observations • Most believe: • Water & sewer systems in good/excellent condition • Roads & transit in fair/poor condition • Must invest to prosper economically • Investing now will save money in long run
Overall Observations • Some confusion on how infrastructure is funded, particularly roads • More willingness to change behavior than pay more • Most say funding is inadequate • But also say issue is not amount of funding, it’s how efficiently it’s used
Next Steps • Present to SEMCOG General Assembly • Incorporate into policy recommendations for transportation plan and others • Focus on reducing peak demand • Raise bar on definition of congestion • Demonstrate current funding is being used efficiently
Next Steps • Inform elected officials on public opinion • Actions public is willing to take • Understanding of economic connection • Lack of funding knowledge • Help with messaging to public
