  1. Strategic Planning Discussion St. John’s School Parents and Alumni February 2014

  2. Non-negotiables for the Board of Trustees and SJS leadership: • Class size • Small student to faculty ratio • Emphasis on academic preparation and maintaining high admission standards • “Everybody is known and loved” • Recruitment and retention of our talented faculty • Students have access to a diverse selection of classes and programs • Chapel • A K-12 program focused on the “whole child” • Fostering unique divisional experiences while building a stronger K-12 community • Maintaining admissions entry points for new families and students

  3. Results From Recent Survey • Parents and Alumni ranked a safe and secure campus environment, a rigorous, high quality academic experience, and first-class, state-of-the-art academic buildings as the highest priorities for a SJS experience • A small student:faculty ratio and emphasis on developing well-rounded students rounded out the top 5.

  4. Results From Recent Survey • The most frequent themes for the ONE thing parents and alumni would not change: • Sense of community • High academic standards/rigor

  5. Results From Recent Survey • Adjectives most often used to describe SJS: • Caring • Challenging • Supportive • Rigorous • Traditional

  6. Opportunities • Taub Property Acquisition • Why? • What do we want St. John’s to look like in 2025? • Long-range planning and master facility planning process

  7. Growing City and Changing Demographics • Houston has seen steady population growth since the mid-20th century. Historically, St. John’s has not been positioned to meet the needs of this growing city. • 1950: 596,000 people in Houston and 476 enrolled at SJS • 1980: 1,595,138 people in Houston and 1,004 enrolled at SJS • 2010: 2,100,263 people in Houston and 1247 enrolled at SJS

  8. Tensions • How do we thoughtfully increase the size of the student population while keeping our non-negotiables sacred?

  9. Community Challenges • Perception of “loss” • Managing disruption during construction • Examining the stress on our shared spaces especially Chapel • Coordinating the schedules of three divisions with a larger school population • Reaching a wider audience so we can attract a larger applicant pool from the greater Houston community
