  1. POWER-UP day 1 • What makes metal different than other materials (like wood, ceramics, cloth, etc). • List as many ways as possible.

  2. PRE-MAGNETISM & ELECTRICITY A brief overview of atoms And sub-atomic particles

  3. Atom Definition • Atoms are the basic unit of matter, which consist of a dense inner nucleus and an outer cloud of electrons.

  4. The sub-atomic particles • There are 3 sub-atomic particles • - Protons • - Neutrons • - Electrons

  5. - Positively charged- found in the nucleus - Relatively large mass - Stationary within a solid object Protons

  6. Electrons • Negatively charged • Found orbiting outside the nucleus • Virtually no mass • Have incredibly high velocities around the nucleus, always moving around

  7. -ignore for our class this year - Not charged - in nucleus -relatively large mass - stationary Neutrons

  8. There are three types of bonds between atoms - Ionic - covalent - metallic Connecting atomsto make objects

  9. We can ignore these for our class. Pay attention to them in chemistry. Ionic bonds

  10. We can ignore these for our class. Pay attention to them in chemistry. Covalent bonds

  11. Its described as a “sea of electrons” around the protons. The electrons freely pass between protons evenly dispersing themselves in the object This only happens in metals. Metallic Bonds

  12. When all of the electrons in a metal object have been shifted to one side. Polarized ... ..... ........ ................. . .... ...........................

  13. ACTIVITY!!!!

  14. Please draw a picture of how the electrons move around the protons in a solid metal object Now draw a picture of how the electrons are dispersed in a polarized metal object. Exit Ticket Day 1
