Expanding the United States In 1819, Spain was persuaded to sell Florida to the US American Gen. Andrew Jackson led a force to fight the Seminoles and capture Spanish Forts in 1818 Florida became a US territory in 1821 Americans also began settling in the Oregon Territory in the Pacific Northwest
The Monroe Doctrine • The policy warned European powers to stop meddling in the Western Hemisphere • “The occasion has been judged proper for asserting, as a principle in which the rights and interests of the United States are involved, that the American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers…” • James Monroe’s address to Congress, 2 Dec 1823
What did the policy mean? America lacked the power of the army or navy to intimidate Europe The doctrine reflected America’s growing desire for power This policy became much more significant in the late 1800s and early 20th century
