COURSE ENROLLMENT FOR PRACTICUM FIELD EXPERIENCE • Students should be enrolled in one of the following courses in order to complete a Practicum/Student Teaching Field Experience. These courses are a “required” seminar format. Students are expected to participate fully in each. • Practicum: • Educ432: Secondary, K-12; • Educ456: Elementary, Middle Grades, SPED; BK 456: Birth to Kindergarten; • Educ693: Graduate Students • Student Teacher: • Educ 457: Elementary, BK, SPED • Educ 458: Secondary, K-12; • Educ 460: Middle Grades; • Educ 557/558: Graduate Students
PRACTICUM FIELD EXPERIENCE FINAL GRADE • The final grade for the practicum/student teaching field experience is determined as a result of several components: • Practicum/Student teaching Field Experience Seminar (Enrolled Course): Attendance, Activities, Assignments (Assessed by Course Instructor) • Practicum/Student Teaching Field Experience Binder within Tk20 (Assessed by University Supervisor(s) • Field Experience Classroom Performance/Actual Practicum/Student Teaching Field Experience. (As reflected through observations by University Supervisor and Cooperating Teacher documented observation protocols.)
NC Licensure Requirements • STUDENT TEACHERS MUST: • Successfully demonstrate “proficiency” or higher on Student Teacher Binder Product • Successfully demonstrate “met” on all components of LEA/IHE Certification of Teaching Capacity • If these are not sufficiently met, NO North Carolina Teacher License!
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS When adequate competence in teaching has been demonstrated, practicum or student teaching candidates may be assigned responsibility for the class without the cooperating teacher being present. However, practicum students are not substitute teachers and cannot take over the class without a county employee in the classroom. Student teachers also are NOT substitute teachers but they will be assuming gradual responsibility for a two week period during the field experience. HOWEVER, they are not “substitute teachers”.

Standard 3: Teachers know the content they teach. Standard 4: Teachers facilitate learning for their students. Standard 5: Teachers reflect on their practice.

Candidates in Practicum • 50 hour experience: • Secondary/K-12 areas/I + Master’s E/M • Minimum of 10 hours of teaching • Teaching: PLAN/IMPLEMENT/EVALUATE • 100 hour experience: • BK, Elem, Middle, Spec Education • Minimum of 35 hours of teaching • Teaching: PLAN/IMPLEMENT/EVALUATE
Candidates in Student Teaching UNDERGRADUATE: This is a 300-hour, 50 day, ten-consecutive-week experience for undergraduate prospective teachers. Successful completion will result in the awarding of six (6) semester hours of credit. It consists of three types of activities: observing, assisting in the classroom, and teaching. There must be a minimum of 125 hours of teaching throughout the total experience. In order to classify as teaching hours, the lesson is planned by the candidate, pre-approved prior to teaching by the cooperating teacher, delivered by the candidate to the students either in small or large groups in the classroom or appropriate educational setting and is assessed and reflected upon by the candidate for possible improvements. POST BACCALAUREATE: This is a field experience of 5, 10, or 14 consecutive weeks in duration based upon any prior experience in the public schools.

Learn the policies and procedures in the classroom and the school Learn how to keep the necessary paperwork Familiarize yourself with the available materials and equipment Attend faculty and parent meetings Visit other professionals in the building Ensure that you have experienced, engaged, in all components of your portfolio/binder Candidates Observing
Prepare instructional materials Tutor small groups of students Create a bulletin board or technology presentation Teach a lesson using the Cooperating Teacher’s Plan Candidates Assisting
Format (school/classroom required/ suggested) Cooperating Teacher Approval (PRIOR TO TEACHING!) We are focusing on your lesson planning/ instructional techniques like a laser this semester. Be prepared! Lesson Plans
Due Date APRIL 28, 2014 by 12 NOON The electronic binder is a “warehouse”. It only holds your materials. You will only need it when you are ready to load everything into it. DO NOT wait to complete the requirements, do it ongoing and continuously throughout field experience. WE PROMISE, it will catch up with you if you don’t!
