power to people - the right to elect their representatives who rule the country • making decisions - in democracy citizens share power and civic responsibility to make decisions on how they are governed
minority rights - A majority rules in the election process, but individual rights are protected, there is no exclusion of the minorities' rights. If a decision is made by a majority, but that decision negatively affects the fundamental rights of a minority, then the decision must be adjusted to reflect what is fair to all citizens
freedom- the ability to act according to your own will; you can make choices from all available options. • liberty - liberty includes the freedom to believe what you want, freedom to choose your own friends, and to have your own ideas and opinions, to express your ideas in public, the right for people to meet in groups, the right to have any lawful job or business.
freedom of speechis freedom to articulate your opinions and ideas without fear of revenge, censorship or legal sanction. • freedom of religionis freedom to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance. It also freedom to change one's religion or beliefs
equality- equal treatment under the law; no one is above the law / citizens have equal access to social institutions, they are provided with identical access to material and spiritual goods, everyone has the same right to participate in political life, including elections, party formation, election committees, etc. • justice - the right to a fair trial
privacy- the right to privacy without unwarranted intrusion by the government • the right to free, fair and periodic elections - elections are held on a regular and periodic basis and citizens have the opportunity to elect new people to government posts. Citizens are guaranteed that these elections will be fair and everyone who is eligible to vote will have that opportunity.
active citizenship- citizens of a democracy not only have the right to vote, but also the responsibility to participate in social life • anti-discrimination - underrepresented people have the same rights as the majority. • variety- recognition, acceptance and respect racial, ethnic and religious differences
tolerance - the right to be different (protected from discrimination based on age, gender identity, sexual orientation, political ideology, national origin, race, religion, pregnancy, veteran status and disabilities.) • freedom of choices- we can make choices about our life, to develop our potential as human being and to live free from fear, harassment and discrimination. Nobody imposes anything on us, we can make decisions on our own.
truth- citizens look for and tell the truth • independent media- free and independent media with journalists having investigative power • fundamental human rights- democracy guarantees and respects the human rights as stated in the constitution • security -people can feel safe in their country
