A New Testament Outline Spring Semester 2003 Agitated Inspiration - Galatians Lesson Number Six Pastor Marvin McKenzie
Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • Galatians was written about the year 48AD. This would have been prior to his second missionary journey and would have been his first Epistle. • One of the more interesting things about reading Paul's writings is how much time is devoted in them to defending what he preached. • It seemed like he just barely would leave a place when another group of professing Christians would come and try to turn those he had led to Christ away! • They would enter into the congregations that Paul had established, AND THEN TRY TO CONVERT THEM TO THEIR OWN WAY OF THINKING!
Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • There were several groups that would do that in Paul's day, • But one of the more prominent, and the ones involved here, were called JUDAIZERS. • Their doctrine was essentially, THAT YOU COULD NOT BE A CHRISTIAN UNLESS YOU WERE FIRST A JEW. • They were consequently trying to talk Paul's converts into being circumcised and becoming Jewish proselytes. • They would argue that Paul didn't have the authority to do what he was doing, that he was not a full fledged Apostle, and there fore should not be trusted.
Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • Paul here stands with holy indignation and proclaims Ø His authority before the Lord and Ø His agitation that they had removed or turned from what he had taught them!
Lesson Five: Agitated Inspiration - Galatians • I have found most preachers have to spend a lot of time Ø CONTENDING FOR THEIR POSITION, • Because there is always somebody that doesn't think they should be able to do what they are doing, and Ø CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH, • Because there is always somebody that wants to turn their doctrine to another!
