CatalHuyuk • Age: One of the oldest settlements in the world (about 9000 years old); • Significance • Possibly one of the first places where farming was used • One of the most important active archeological sites
Jericho • Where? In Israel
Jericho • Age: 10,000 year old village • Significance: maybe the oldest village in the world • Some archeological evidence confirms the Biblical battles
Aleppo • Where? In Syria
Aleppo • Age: 5000 years old • Significance: continually used temple to the storm god

Forming Civilizations • A civilization is a complex culture with these five characteristics: • Specialized workers • Technology • Advanced cities • Institutions • Record keeping
Institution • A group/structure dedicated to a single purpose, OR a long-lasting pattern of order and cooperation in society • Does not have to be a place • Does not have to be a “thing”

Farming Needs • Civilization requires agriculture • Allows or creates STAIR • Agriculture requires fertile land (good for farming) and water • Count on rain and Slash and Burn Farming • Or use river water for irrigation
Why River Valleys • Constant source of water/soil • Makes the land fertile • Provides silt • Allows for irrigation
Why River Valleys • Transportation and trade
Why River Valleys • (sometimes) Protection • Could be mountains, or a desert, surrounding the valley • Not all river valleys share this feature!
